So I am driving along one hot summer night and my 84 shuts down. Turns over but wont start. So I pull of the air cover and see I am not getting any gas. So I let the car sit a few minutes and it runs long enough to get me a few miles closer to home where it dies again. I let it sit and manage to get it home. I look through my repair manual and see it is easy to replace the fuel pump. This has happened to me with several mustangs so I am confident it is the fuel pump. So I go the parts store and pickup a new one.
I get the old pump out and of course discover the new pump does not have the right connector. So I get a different one and install it. But nothing pumps.
Hmmm... So I reinstall the old one and still nothing pumps. I checked all the fuses and they are OK but it is not pressurizing the pump. As I understand it should pump right away and I should not have to cramk the engine awhile to get fuel. I am fairly sure it is not the oil sending unit because the old pump would give gas when it is cool. I am at a loss. I would appreciate any info or tips anyone might have. Thanks in advance.
I have yet to check the voltage. Do you know where the fuel pump relay is?
BTW Do you know why all those wires in the fuel tank with voltage to them dont make cars blow up?
I checked the voltage at the pump and it reads 0.02 I double checked the settings on my voltage meter and connected it straight to the battery and got 12.1 then rechecked at the pump to confirm 0.02. Where do I go from here?
If I am not getting the fuel pump to activate what would checking the fuel filter do as it iis down stream. If the pump was pumping and I was not getting gas at the injector I would check it. Any one know where the fuel pump relay is located? It is not mentioned in my Hayes manual.
I checked the main connector to the fuel pump. Testing connector A to B I get 11.1v which is currently what the battery is at. I tested connector A to a ground and got 11.1v. Can I rule out fuel pump relay if I am getting this voltage at the connector? Any help would be appreciated unless your going to tell me to check my damd fuel filter again!
I wonder if the guys at the chev engineering department ever came up with the idea to put all the dam relays in one place and mark them in english....right on the cover. BTW went to chev to get a new aux fan relay and it is made in Taiwan..... :nonod:
