Try and figure this out. I have had a problem with code 33 and limp home mode. Today I was messing with relay wires while the car was running and managed to shock the crap out of myself. The wires had backed way out of the clips.
1. How do you take apart these clips?
The wiring doesn't make any sense. Mine is an '86 but I have an '87 shop manual.
2. Did things change drastically betwwen those years??
The shop manual has a letter "f" listed but the connector only goes to "e".
The relays have an f listed on one side but only enough pins to go to e.
The manual wiring is:
Power relay
a- orange
b- empty
c- blue
d- red
e-purple
f- black/white
The car has:
a- purple
b- black/white
c- red
d- blue
e- orange
The burn-off in the manual has:
a- orange
b- nothing
c- nothing
d- orange
e- blue
f- black
the car has:
a- 2 blues
b- black
c- orange
d- nothing
e-orange
Any clues?? Should I match the book or just fix the loose wires and keep it the same? Do you think it fried the relays??
Re: How does this even run? MAF relay question??? (tworottiedogs)
86 uses different connectors than 87 and later. You can buy replacement connectors at NAPA for ~$5 each. The same connector is used for the fan relays and the fuel pump relay.
Re: How does this even run? MAF relay question??? (Bluevette85)
thanks,
I think I will buy new connectors tomorrow. Do they come with the pins? It still doesn't make sense. Are the relays different between years? I figured out how to get the connector apart. It has the worst connections that I have ever seen. There is about an inch of copper showing above the connector and I think some loose strands were causing the problems. Does anybody know the pin layout for an '86????
Re: How does this even run? MAF relay question??? (tworottiedogs)
I can post the parts number when I get home. The connector comes with wires. The relays are different between 86 and 87. Two 86 Power relays will work for you. Do not use two burnoff relays.
Re: How does this even run? MAF relay question??? (tworottiedogs)
I just checked out a friends '86 iroc manual and it looks like my wires are correct but look like crap. The purple and Black/white had a couple of copper strand touching. I think that new connectors, relays and a maf should fix me up again. I hope!!!
Re: How does this even run? MAF relay question??? (tworottiedogs)
My car ran like crap intermittently for a year before I found the problem you are describing. The MAF relays are exposed to battery acid corrosion, and the loss of insulation on these connectors is a pretty common thing. I finally found the problem once the wires started shorting out badly enough to set a code 34, prior to that the short was just causing my MAF readings to be too low, which caused massive detonation and driveability problems. :banghead:
Re: How does this even run? MAF relay question??? (vetracer)
For what its worth the car will run with the MAF completely unplugged. It forces the ECM to use MAF tables hard coded into the chip instead of values it gets from the MAF itself.

Dont make the repair problem and engineering problem, do a little more research and find a model specific diagram, I had ecm diagrams that were inconsistant with the vehicle, after some checking I got the correct diagram, point is the vehice is probably correct and the diagram from the 87 is not correct for you application. IMHO
