Default Increase rear anti-roll when adding 17x11's?

I'm stepping up to 17x11 rears (NOS A-mold) on my '96 LT4/Z51. Suspension charts indicate that RPO Z16 (GS's) received 26mm rear anti-roll bars, while all others received 24mm rear anti-roll bars. Is it recommended that I swap out my 24mm for a 26mm when I upgrade the wheels? What are the pros/cons? Though I'm no suspension guru, I thought that added meat to the rear would increase understeer, while stepping up the anti-roll diameter will increase understeer even more. Who's got the scoop?

The larger/stiffer rear bar will create more oversteer...loose
A larger/stiffer front bar creates more understeer...push
Yes the larger tires/wheels in the rear create more understeer...push

With the extra grip of the larger surface area tires/wheels the factory opted to balance the suspension out by adding a larger rear bar...26mm

There is a lot more going on with spring rates Etc on the 96 model, the factory went way soft that last year. The trend overall is softer spring rates & larger roll bars & better shock rates.

FWIW, I run 17 X11's all around with 285's & 335's a 30mm front bar & a 26mm rear bar W/ base 1995 FE1 springs. Its all subjective with different spring rates and such but my car is stuck like glue & turn in is still excellent.

I'm curious, do you have any pics with the 17 x 11's in the front? I have never seen this before.

I've seen it before. 315's in the front and 335's in the rear, some ZR-1ers run this set up for road racing.

Here is one pic...

Fairly common to run 11" on the front, C4's will take large wheels & tires up front without problems.

Man, I have to get busy and tidy up my ride. That looks good.

Well, they fit. But driving pleasure may be influenced by
road condition for dual-purpose cars. For we unfortunates
who are condemed to coexist where lane ruts abound, 315s
on the front might be a wee bit large.

I agree 315's will track ruts badly that's one reason I don't run 315's on the street...only 285's. You can't win with dual purpose cars it's always a trade off on tires & alignment settings.
BTW, nice ride NavyVet...both cars look good.

I've had the exact same suspoension as you. Before I did the 11" rear rims, I had already installed 30mm/26mm solid front and rear swaybars. I loved the flatter cornering, the car was still very nuetral steering. When I upgraded to the 11" rear rims, I didn't really notice more push, if it's there, it's subtle.

Conclusion: go with the 30mm/26mm solid swaybars, you'll love it. If you're not up for a swaybar mod, leave it until after you have some drive time, a little more push is considered safer, so you won't be taking any chancing with your safety, just gonna be bored :)

Yep, I drove my car for about a year with the 17x11 rear combo and it would push when I was driving faster than I really should have into a corner. Added the 30/26 bars and it is much better. I autoX mine, and it is my daily driver. Much improved both ways.

Superlund - thanks a lot :flag I only run the 315s on the track - Kumhos or Hoosiers. When I drive on the street, I use 275/40x17s on a-mold 9.5s. With my alignment, it handles great, but tends to tramline a bit. I don't take my hands off the wheel when there are lane ruts or freeway grooves present :steering:

Yeah, nice combo superlund,

But personally, I'd have gone with the 315's in front on those wide wheels. More grip and should look better.

IMO,

BIG JIM

Anyone have experience when installing 17x11 315's on the rear of an 84 with Z51? I just did this upgrade using the AFS wheels with the 84 offset. Up front running 17x9.5 with 285 Yoko AVS tires. So far the rear feels "planted" on sweeping on-ramps.
