Re: Which Brake Upgrade? J55 or C5 (MrNuke)
MrNuke,
What kind of Wheels do you have on that Vette of yours....I think they look awesome!
My vette is a Silver 96 CE and I think that Wheel design would look good on it.

Jeffvette,
We spread the J55's over 1/4" in about 10 track days. The GS did not measurably spread after 70+ track days. They are over twice as thick in critical areas that support the outer pad. It was a valid A to B comparison with same drivers, same tracks, same model pads.

BTW, what does the C5 Caliper weigh, and a C5 rotor?
I don't remember the exact weights; but, the C5 rotors, suprisingly, weighed slightly less than the J55 rotors, and the C5 calipers weighted slightly more than the J55 calipers. I seem to remember thinking, in the end, without the caliper adapters, their total weights were the same.
If you look at the rotors, the J55 rotor is recessed inward from the hub more than the C5 rotor. Even though the C5 rotor is thicker, I think it weighs less because the J55 has more material at the hub area.
However, I should note, that I bought some special GM "performance" rotors that were produced for a very short period of time and abruptly discontinued. The tags with them said something about an experimental material.

Road Racers and DE participants say the C5 calipers spread too. It's a GM thing.
Hence the reason for these

How much different are the pads when you go from the C4 brakes (12") to the C5 brakes?

Please note, that the C4 standard and J55 brakes are basically the same, the ZR1 caliper is slightly different, and the GS, the most effective of the set.
NONE OF THEM include a cooling slot in the caliper to allow gases and heat to vent out... bad idea... the heat builds.
the C5 does have such a vent, but it is rather small, compared to Brembo, Baer, Wilwood, AP or Stoptech.

Personally the 4 wheel drum brakes from my old Dodge would stop on a dime------if it were the size of Alaska :D
For my purposes, the J55(stock) are plenty adequate. I haven't had a chance to road race or anything like that, but out on the highway, panic stops were easy to handle and on the drag strip of course they perform just fine.

Don't mean to cut in on your thread, but where is a good place to purchase the Z06 upgrade brake kit for a C4?
Gene is a member on the forum...Gene284 is his handle I think.
You also buy just the adapters from him and get the rest of the components from other sources if you can get it cheaper.
