My 1986 has been skipping on idle and low speed. After a tune up failed to fix it, I took it to the chevy dealer who has had it for 4 days. The fuel injectors checked ok but he says the mass air flow vale and the idle air control vale test bad and need to be replaced. The problem is, he can't guarantee that that will fix the problem and that it might need a compression test. Can anyone give me advice on this? I don't want to put out a lot on money and not have the problem fixed. He also says that the transmission shifts into high gear too soon, making the skipping seem worse. The transmission has always shifted into high gear pretty quick at low speed when in overdrive. Should I let him do the work? and about how much should it cost? Thanks for any help!
Usually, when the MAF sensor goes bad the car will run like complete crap. Can't say much about the IAC motor, but usually when that goes, the car won't idle very well at all.
If the IAC is faulty, it's a pretty easy fix to install a new one, same for the MAF sensor.
If he thinks it's a compression problem, why would he want to throw your money at unrelated parts?
Sorry I can't be more help.
Edit: the transmission problem sounds like the TV cable is not adjusted correctly. Do a search and you'll find the instructions for resetting the TV cable.
