Default SR Bolts - Thread from top or bottom?

I have the Accel/LPE SuperRam. I've re-tapped all of the holes and am ready to bolt the plenum box down to the runners. However, if someone could clear this up I'd appreciate it.

The 16 bolts that hold the SR to the runners via the locking nylon nuts. Do you run these from inside the box down through the runners or do you run them from the bottom side of the runners up through the threaded holes in the plenum? The nut could still be loose but you wouldn't know it because you can't spin the bolt any further. Hope this is making sense.

If from the top inside the plenum box:
Why thread the holes in the plenum? You wouldn't be able to tell for sure if you have the nuts tight on the very bottom very easily as the bolt would stop at the end of its thread (of course).

If from the bottom:
It only makes sense to me that this is why the plenum is threaded and why some people have been saying to put slots in the top of the bolts. But if this is the right way, why is it best to do it this way. What a nightmare it must be to get all 16 in place!!

Shayne

I believe that they run from outside the plenum. I am getting ready to (hopefully) purchase a SR kit where the owner actually threaded the bolts to be tightened from the inside of the plenum. And after reading that, Scorp said "You made the best mod to SuperRam you could have made!", which leads me to believe that they are tightened from the outside normally. Hope that helped some.

Oh, and yes from what I've read from others, it is a nightmare if they're not threaded to go through the plenum. :yesnod:

If memory serves me right, the Plenumn is threaded in stock from factory. The bolts come from the bottom through the runners and bolt into the plenumn. The top of the threaded portion of the bolt can be slotted with a dremel cut-off tool. I bought several small wrenches with different offsets, to wrench around the tubes. Once you get all the bolts started from the bottom, then you can go inside the superram with a small screwdriver that fits the slot you made and pull all the bolts up to the top. Then torque the bolts from the bottom. (No nuts involved in stock set up!)
Alternatively, people modify the whole process. They thread the runners with the next size tap and die set. The with the superram still off the thread New larger/longer bolts. Then they drill out the threads in the superram so that it will slip fit exactly over the bolts sticking up from the runners. Then very carefully put elastic stop nuts on each bolt in the Plenumn, and snug them down. If you drop even one nut down the tubes, you will have to dissassemble the whole engine until you find the lost nut. Many will tell you horror stories of how quickly a single bolt will destroy an engine (scorp chime in). Some stuff rags or foam in tubes just in case. Next time my SuperRam comes off, I will do this modification, but the first time on (2 years ago, I followed the instructions to the letter. Good luck, chris

15 seconds of running and she was gone.

Anyways.... I would leave it the heck alone, but thats just me. The modified inner large 4 bolts is great, but other than that I don't trust those little guys around the edge. The other issue is that there isn't a lot of clearence between the wall of the plenum and where the bolt head WOULD be if done from the top.

If you've tapped all the holes they are going to go in very smoothly. I wouldn't worry about it. I can mount my plenum in nearly no time at all. The 16 bolts are easy after being tapped to clean up the crummy factory threads.
