I dropped the pan and replaced the filter and fluid on my '89 coupe today. The job went OK but after taking a lot of time to ensure the pan was on correctly, making about 8 passes around each bolt, I added 5 quarts of fuild and gave it a quick test on the ramps while I could check my work.
I found a steady drip coming from the hole in the inspection cover over the torque converter. It not running down from the pan anywhere, I checked carefully and wiped the perimeter of the pan with a shop towel looking for any fluid.
Any ideas  I didn't expect this. I'm not certain if I had a leak from this area before but this is a bit much, maybe a drop every 5 seconds, enough to start a puddle pretty quick. Could this be a problem that was masked by old fuild, and now that I have added new slippery fluid it's showing me a problem I have actually had? I haven't even had a chance to check the fluid level yet but I would guess I'm within a quart of where I need to be.
I guess the next step might be to pull the inspection cover and get a better look up there? I'm starting to wonder if this might be a main seal or something? :mad
Re: Problem after Auto Trans Fluid/Filter change (Dolfan)
I had the same problem and I did drop the inspection cover. What I found was the trans fluid had seeped inside the inspection cover while i was draining it and turning the engine over sent it out that little hole. After cleaning the cover inside, the "leak" stopped. I probably would not hurt to take the time to inspect just to be safe.

Re: Problem after Auto Trans Fluid/Filter change (Dolfan)
New fluid is going to find a hole much faster than the old fluid did.
Ive had a small tranny leak for months at the flywheel, not sure exactly where yet, and as soon as i changed the fluid, the leak got MUCH worse.
Theres now a large puddle on the floor. Taking her to be looked at tomorrow, probably the front seal.

Well I hope that I have the problem Subman talked about, I plan to pull the inspection cover tonight after work and take a look. I'm really hoping it isn't a front seal problem. If it is I'll need to take it someplace, even on ramps there is barely enough room to mess with the pan and filter let alone droping the trans to replace a main seal.
Re: Problem after Auto Trans Fluid/Filter change (Dolfan)
Well it looks like things went my way  I pulled the inspection cover off and there was a bit of fluid in it. Cleaned the cover within an inch of its life while it was off and replaced. Now it's dry as a bone :D I really wasn't looking forward to a main seal issue.
