I broke two off Saturday morning. I removed the exhaust piece with the cat and drilled and tapped both. I had some all-thread laying around, so I cut 2 lenghts off and used it on both. I know its kind of a half-a%! fix, but I had to get it finished in a very short period of time. So far so good, but I'm not sure how long they will last. good luck!
When I had this happen (on another car), I just pulled the manifold off and then I was able to use a bench vise to hold onto the little nub that was left. A little Liquid Wrench, 24 hours of soaking then I just twisted the manifold while the bench vise held onto the nub/stud.
If that fails you can take it to a machinist, or buy a used one from a salvage yard.
Re: Broken Exhaust Manifold studs (silver & red CE)
I also had this happen on another vehicle a few years ago. I was uncomfortable drilling out the stud myself so I took it to a shop who did the same anyway. To make a long story short they tried to do it ont the car and @(*$@ it up and hit a water jacket. My advise is take the head off and drill it out unless you have a clear shot with a drill will the head is still on the car.
Vic,
These are a common problem on these manifolds....I had this happen to me before.I took the manifolds off and went to my local Meineke and the guys there torched them out for me and put new studs in.Was an easy fix for them.
And was real cheap. While these guys are a chain,I knew the guys there and they always did good exhaust work and never let me down. All the bad rusted studs were torched out and fresh new ones installed.
I also bought stainless steel nuts for each of the 3 studs for the Y pipe and this keeps corrosion down and prevents the nuts from rust-welding to the studs to ease any future removal needs. Its come in handy a few times already when I did some other work.
FYI,new studs are usually 7-9 bucks and a few more dollars for install.
Did the same thing and went the lazy way out....which ended up being a big mistake...I tried drilling the old stud out from the top...use a really long drill bit extensive and drilled...and drilled...and drilled...and drilled...went through 5-6 bits until I started to put water on it to cool it down...and drilled..and drilled....finally after about 6 hours of agony I finally fixed it........do it right....take it off and have someone do it..or upgrade to headers :)
Ok , please provide the info. I want the Hooker supercomps.
Ok, I just hopped onto summit to see what they have for prices.
HOK-2149 : $479.95
HOK-16720: $139.95
You'll also need new exhaust manifold gaskets (like $13 at Autozone for Felpro) and 3" collector gaskets. I use SUM-610300 ($9.95) for collector gaskets. They are a dead soft aluminum.
