i have heard lots of talk here about "gutting the cats". does that just entail takin of the cats...busting up all the ceramic honeycomb inside and dumping it out??...since there is no emmissions testing here in FLA, why not just take off the cats and replace it with similar sized pipe? does that add ALOT of growl or just a lil..i want a bit more growl.its just a lil to tame for me now.....and are there any other effects to opening up the exhaust flow? (idle changes, temp..etc) I dunno..i've never done any mods yet.
I live in Oviedo, just down the road from UCF. If you want to hear some growl then swing by my place one evening and have a listen. I think without question, you will get a little more bark if you replace the cats with a test pipe.
i am actually in oviedo too...off old lockwood....seems like your vette is really suped...i'd love to see it and take a listen. email me at runningonice@yahoo.com we can set something up for this weekend maybe...i gotta wash her first...had to skip this past weekend cuz i was outta town....is yours a garage queen or a daily?
Thats what you must change if you want some noise.
Not trying to hi-jack this thread..but can someone explain what a "catback" actually is...I hear it all the time...but never understood it. Thanks....
Also...I am interested in gutting mine to for a little more performance and noise...I have heard you gain a little of both.
A cat back is just what it sounds like. Its your exhaust system from the catalytic convertor to the mufflers/tailpipes. If your 85 has the same setup as my 89 did, you'd be replacing your rear Y pipe which attaches to your mufflers. In front of the cat on a stock car, you'd have 2 pre-cats and pipes leading to your exhaust manifolds. If you want serious sound while still being somewhat emmisions friendly, get a set of long tube headers, a random technologies cat and a nice cat back system like a B&B or Power Effects. It will definitely growl, yet still sound very smooth. It's a much more significant investment than simply gutting your main cat, but will produce a better result IMHO.
The best thing to do is listen to other people's cars and get an idea for the sound from different systems. I'm sure that checking out luvmy92's car will give you a good idea what a solid exhaust setup will sound like.
i'd love to know more about the "catback" situation too...i know that the mufflers have been upgraded...tips are different too...i dunno if the stock catback has been dealt with. i just want a little more "vette" sound...that bubbly V8 idle.....little roar on take off....but i don't want a headache every time i drive...it is my daily after all....so now info on gutting(or replacing) cats....and finding out what the deal is with the catback......experts out there..fill us in..and one other thing......save the wave :seeya
I wouldnt just gut it, especially since you probably dont know what resonance is like either. If you gutted it, and installed a better catback, you might end up with some nasty resonance (dependin on what catback you get). And that will cause a headache if its bad.
But if you want to anyway, just take a hammer and a chisel and whack away. Eventually it'll all break loose.
FYI, i'm going to get some Power Effects and a Random Tech cat.
Borla, B&B, Flowmaster are other ones that ive heard and kinda liked.
Our exhaust systems have a front Y from the exhaust headers to the cat and a rear Y from the cat into the mufflers. This assembly from the cat through the exhaust tips is the cat-back.
For a more agressive sound and more hp as well, install a mandrel bent 2 1/2" SS front Y pipe, a hi-flow cat or a 3" section of pipe and a hi-flow cat-back system.
My FlowMaster cat-back is a little loud for some people though I love the agressive note. You might try the Sound Effects with it's adjustable sound level feature. Also muffler elims have a nice rumble and are cheaper than most muffler systems.
Since you will be getting more air out of the engine install a K&N air filter with cut lid to get a little more air into it. And, especially in FL, install a 160 deg stat & fan switch to pack in denser cool air.

Orlando, I'm a grad student at UCF with a red '87. Dunno if you've seen my car around campus or not (usually headed to or from the Engine Research Lab). If you want, you can take a listen to it to see what an L98 with long tubes, a gutted cat, and Borlas sounds like. Mike (LuvMy92) and I are good friends, so if you meet up with one of us, you'll likely meet the other. Mike's car is a good example of a nice, clean street/track car. Email me at jogross3@hotmail.com and we can get together. I'll be in West Palm working from tomorrow morning until saturday night, and will be back and forth B/W Orlando and WPB every week, but can be reached up in Orlando the first half of each week.
Like John said, if you run into one of us, you'll likely run into the other. He is my wrench after all. :D
I live right behind the Big Ten Tire off Mitchell Hammock. Let's see if we can't hook up this weekend (girlfriend will be out of town). I'll shoot you an Email for time/directions. As you can see from my sig posted earlier, I have 1.75" headers w/3" collectors, a 3" Billy Boat exhaust w/mufflers and a 3" X-Pipe in place of the resonator. In addition, I have removed the cats. In my own opinion I think it sounds like what a vette should sound like.
I've heard so many good things about the rumble of the Billy Boat B&B that I am going to swap out my Corsa just to hear what the fuss is all about. But I've also heard it's so loud you can get tired of it on a daily driver.

Depends on how many Honda "racers" are in your area who feel inadequate when they hear the car just idling there, and thus insist in infesting your general area with an attacking swarm of bees. There's a lot of them in Orlando, so the vette's exhaust note never gets tiring.

:iagree:
Got the B&B cat back on my stock LT1 with stock manifolds and cats.
The sould became deeper/louder but not untolerable. The rumble was somewhat loud between 1500-2500rpm....the cruising rpm
Next I "punched" the cats. A bit more sound...not much. Performance gain? Not worth mentioning...
Next ... the headers. Sound became a bit more agressive, but not a huge difference.
At the end...headers....punched cats....B&B catback and the car (with a pretty much stock motor) sounded deep and agressive, but drivable.
From stock to 383 and the car is NOT AN EVERYDAY DRIVER, unless you use the coin holders in the center console as aspirin holders. Any more than a short 10 minute drive and my head is pounding.
