Two questions:
#1 When the tranny shops talk about the number of splines (27 or thirty), are they referring to the rear tailhousing output shalf- or is there an input shaft spline (that the torque converter slides onto)?
#2 If it's where the torque converter is, how do I determine whether or not my `84 has 27 or 30 splines, short of taking the TC off?
30 spline started mid year 84 with replacement of the shaft with one of increased diameter in between the pump and converter splines to prevent breakage in the seal ring area of the shaft. From 84 to 86 you got several torque upgrade components.
87 was the first year all capacity upgrades were incorporated.
For the second question, you need to order the 30 spline converter/shaft and pump. You can always return the shaft and pump if it has it alrready, but you DO NOT WANT to use any performance converter with a 27 spline shaft. It will leave you stranded.
I knew the splines changed mid year 84, but wanted to make sure. :D So there's no way of finding out BEFORE I take it apart? I want to order my Torque converter beforehand....
Thanks for the info though, I will have to bring all of this to the shop.
