i just got off the phone with jegs, and summit and they both say that the only timing chain they have available for my 96 is a $343 SINGLE roller cloyes set!!!
this seems outrageous to me... does anybody have any other alternatives or suggestions?
it seems like for that much $$ you ought to be able to get DOUBLE roller at least...
i've seen timing BELT kits that are in that price range (for GEN 1 tho)
jeez, how much is the stock chain?
Keep looking!I'm pretty sure they make a double roller. They are outrageous though.I think you can buy just the chain for $39.I just saw this on the forum the other day. Also chevy makes a heavy duty set-up.Check with GMparts direct.I'm sorry I don't have a great answer.
That just sounds too high. What does an LT4 chain set cost? (Should be good enough)
A friend of mine rebuilt his motor, he put a new opti/pump and timing chain/gear set on. He would have complained if it cost that much just for the chain set.
You can get the LT4 Extreme Duty chain kit for that much and have money left over for some other stuff too. It is only about $30 or $40 more than a standard LT1/4 chain setup from Superior last time I checked...(Jeff was there).
Sonny, here is the problem. When you use the waterpump drive for the LT1/LT4 engine there is not enough room for a double roller timing chain. If you switch to an electric water pump you can us a double roller (I think I paid $80 from Summit for the Cloyes set.) Here is a picture of the GM extreme duty set which I had on my 396 before switching to the double roller. It was never run and I can make somebody a good deal on it. Drop me an email if your interested. :steering:
I bit the bullet and bought the Extreme Duty GM set. But try and price a set of rings for some stock '96 pistons. Good luck! Expect to spend $280-300. Nuts.

I don't have the part number but he's right on. Exact setup I run as well and I think the double roller was $85. Call Chris at Speed Demon. Link is in my sig or to your left. :D

The part number you're looking for for the Cloyes true double roller is 9-3145 (for use with Mez).
