just when i thought that i had replaced every part on my pos '85, i found another, this time it is the air idle motor.
i have changed it and it idled down fairly well, however now it keeps jumping back up to 1800 to 2100 rpm's at idle, occasionally it idles back down to 1000rpm.
wtf??
did i mention how much i hate this car?
thanks Greg
I had this problem awhile back, I didn't know WTF was going on, took it to my mech. He accessed the computer and found that a sensor that send a signal telling the computer that the car is cold was bad. I forgot which one. Mine would run fine then it would idle up and then down again, I would be at a light and all of a sudden it would go up. Sometimes I would hit a bump in the road and it would go down. Once the sensor got replaced everything was fine. Check it out :seeya

this all sounds familiar :yesnod:
anybody know what sensor it is?
"did i mention how much i hate this car?"... Dude, I feel/felt the same way. these early C4's can put you in the poor house and then the nut house. I've been F'n with a F'd up idle for MONTHS. Come to find out it's the dam TPS that was "intermitenly" bad. I posted on here, i did this, vacum checks, finally i was scanning it while it was acting up.... TPS V: .33V. !!!! DING !!!
That was it. TPS V was low or hi, or F'd up. Replaced it, reset the idle setting like GM says... the 500RPM in D ...(must do it!!).. runs great now. I was about to beat the poopie out of this thing. relax, step back.... and look again. sometimes the answer is there, but not when we're looking....
:banghead: I know how you feel man. Get a scanner, a must need for these cars.
It sounds like your mech was talking about the CTS (coolant temp sensor) located on the front of the water pump.
As far as scanners go, I have the auto xray that I bought @ Kragen same as Schuks (sp). It works well enough but has some limitations. However for the $150 I spent for it, it has paid off.
