Since my brake booster went out 2 weeks ago in the 85 i have not drove the car at all.Well today i go out to start it up and right away a red bar next to the voltage meter comes on and is the volts are at 16.8 and i didnt even have the voltage meter on i had the temp on.anyway for a little bit it got down to 14.7 and then shot back up to 17.2 I dont have any idea why this is going on. please help any info will be great, thanks in advance.
The voltage regulator sounds like it has lost interest. Just pull the alternator and take it to a store that will test it for free, and provide you with a new/rebuilt one, in case it is needed.
I have had my cluster display 16.7-17.1 volts for about 3 years now since I had the cluster rebuilt. I have not had time to send it back for another rebuild as everythign is working perfectly and I don't mind that being off a bit. I haev tested the alternator multiple times, it is charging the correct voltage. Could just be a display cluster issue.
True enough. I guess it would be a more accurate statement if it included "measured at the alternator". The digital display is always a potential source of wrong information. My buddy has an 85 and when he turns on the AC his oil pressure shows 5lbs on the dash display, but the pressure is really OK when read directly.
Measure the voltage at the alternator output terminal. If it is 16-17 volts, your alternator voltage regulator is defective. I'm doubting that you have this high a voltage because on your cluster circuit board is a MOV (metal oxide varistor) to protect it against overvoltage and it would have put smoke out of the dash by now. (please don't ask me how I know this :D )

I didnt see or smell anything so Idont know,This car is fine until 1 thing goes wrong then all of the sudden lots of things seem to go bad all at once.
I guess the question is: Is it running worse than what it was? or is it still okay?
it is runnig worse . i have nt fixed the brake booster problem yet. anyway when i push the brake pedal the rpm's go up and so does the volts. i am starting to dislike this car.....just joking i could never hate my 85.
