Automatic tranny problems - major slippage 35 - 45 mph
This is not my Vette, it's my daughters 89 Bronco 2 that I "rebuilt" for her first car. About 145,00 miles on it.
I think the symptom is probably common to many auto trannys.
First, fluid level is fine, I checked per owner's manual directions.
What happens is, in drive, I get going ok, 1st to 2nd seems to take longer than it should, then I'll be going about 35-40 and the tranny acts like it's in neutral. I can rev the engine up to 4,000 plus & no go at all.
If I manually down shift it to 2nd it seems that the engine power starts to transfer back to the drivetrain.
Then I went to back in my driveway & it's in reverse & NOTHING, no go (again like it's in neutral). Not intermittent, happens every time.
Move the lever thru the gears & gradually I got it backed in.
These are $$$$$$$ symptoms, yes?
Any idea what went south in the auto trans? Thanks!!
I just ripped out the auto trans is my vette. First and second gear were still strong, but, once the trany shifed into 3rd or 4th...nada. The 3/4 clutch pack is gone and the tranny needs a rebuild. You might want to check your tranny fluid, if it is low then that might be your problem, if it looks and smells burnt, you probably need a rebuild.
Its almost definately the 3-4 clutch packs. Mine went out about 5000 miles ago and did exactly what you are talking about. Time for a rebuild for sure.
