Thinking of getting a late 80's set of L98 heads for my 76, will the stock springs handle a mild cam upgrade, say the comp cam 268xe? any help appreciated
Since the heads will be off the car, why risk it, get the springs for the cam. The standard L98 cam is not very lumpy, so I wouldn't use old used L98 springs. Of course it depends on the revs and your budget, but valve bounce is not one of the more endearing features of the SBC. :)
When I upgarded my rockers to 1.60"1 RRs I went with newer springs to avoid potential valve float issues.
If you get a set of #113 heads install either 1.54:1 or 1.60:1 ProMagns RRs that keep the valve lift below .520" so you can use single springs with damper onto the stock spring seats. TPIS makes a set of springs to do the job. So long as that cam has lifts below .488" you can use the 1.60:1 RRs; these will give that flat tapped cam a little more intensity.
If you go with these heads have them pocket ported and worked with 2.00"/1.55" valves, etc. for best results.
Since these heads have 58cc chambers you may need to open the chambers a little or use thicker head gaskets to keep the CR within bounds, depending on your currrent pistons.
IMO anything much over a stock L98 cam with 1.6 RR (~.460 lift on the exhuast) or high miles, I would put in new springs. If I remember right coil bind is around .470-480
