Default Speed Sensor Oddity

Whelp, when the Sled hit the road, the speedo lasted a good 30 minutes then went away. This has several Pros and Cons associated with it:

Pro
1. Odo doesn't increment
2. You can honestly tell the officer that you have no idea how fast you're going

Con
1. Lock-up torque converter doesn't lock up.
2. You have no idea how fast you're going---hard to rate performance that way.

But my main question was this: When ordering the new VSS from GM, they made a big deal about finding our the final drive ratio (2.73) of the vehicle, also stating that the VSS for the 2.5X ratio was no longer available. I buy the correct sensor based on the build codes on the vehicle, and inspect the sensor. It doesn't have the worm gear on it, I've got to transfer that from the old one.

IF I HAVE TO TRANSFER THE OLD GEARING, WHY WAS THE FINAL DRIVE RATIO OF THE CAR SO IMPORTANT?

If you have a 2.5X rear end, you've got the appropriate gears to turn the VSS, if you have a 2.73 rear-end, you've got a different set of gears, don't you?
