Default It's DEAD.

Whelp, some days are diamonds, and some days are stoned.

One of the snap rings in the new U joints didn't seat. Saturday during a WOT downsift to 2nd, the front of the driveshaft let go. We got it over to the side of the road and flatbedded it home. The driveshaft is a loss. But that's only PART of the story.

Got the car to the side and called the wife. Told her the car was dead, she was not happy. I started calling around for a flatbed.

In the meantime, another Corvette Friend had just arrived at the house, he was going to meet us there to see the finished product (not yet knowing it was on a flatbed.) The wife at this point is refilling the 65 gallon Fishtank.

They start talking and decide they need to get the C5 out of the garage so we've got a clean shot of getting the Sled on the lift.

They both forget the fishtank is filling. Rapidly. All over the floor.

We arrive, get the vette on the lift and open the door to see Corvette Friend and wife frantically using the shop vac and rug shampoo'r trying to get the water sucked up.

Several TENSE moments pass as we cordinate between getting the vette on the lift, performing a post mortem, cleaning the family room and moving the stuff in the basement that's right directly under the fish tank.

Having dealt with massive water spills a few times in the past, we got the carpet pulled up, the carpet mat disposed of. (the rubber mat will never dry. If you manage to get the carpet dry, all you'll do is make mold and mildew in two to three weeks.) and fns on the plywood to get it to dry.

Bah. What a crappy day.

The GOOD news is, it coulda been a lot worse (visions of the driveshaft becoming a pole vault spring to mind.), and the whole ordeal won't cost more than about $200. ($75 for a new/used driveshaft, $100 for pad and tool rental for the carpet.)

Daym.. Sorry for your misfortune. Did the torque bar save the DS from becoming a pole vault? :D

Yuppers.

Now kids! Be sure you invest in a driveshaft loop when you break into the 13's! ;)

Hmph, 'break into the 13's'. Now THERE'S a Freudian slip.

I'll drink a few beers on the beach for ya buddy!! But then again; a little sand and your basement could be a nice beach...You can use the driveshaft to hold a beach umbrella. :D
That totally sucks, Mike!

Oh, it's alright. I've got a new/used driveshaft that should be here Tomorrow. It also got me the chance to get a 96 brake master cylinder, cheap. (www.contemporarycorvettes.com)

It really REALLY coulda been much worse. Now If I could only lose that soda straw of a catback exhaust.

Great attitude about the whole deal. I would still be pissed.

Whelp, I dropped in the motor, and tuned it myself in my spare time...that took 4-6 months. The fully tuned motor took out the tranny in about an hour and a half. A month or so after that I found my wife was not just pregnant, but pregnant with TWINS. So six months after THAT I pulled the tranny, and a good five months after THAT I put the tranny back in the car.

Realistically, the driveshaft fix is but a minor annoyance, compared to the 2.5 year project this has been, and it's a pittance compared to the total amount of money I've spent.

I have been told by SWMBO* that I better lay off the loud pedal after this.
