Default Nitrous?

I have a few questions about using Nitrous.

How expensive would a nitrous kit be to buy/Install on my 88 Vette?
Will the life of my engine decrease if I use nittrous... about how much? I would probaby use it once or twice a month at the drag. The engine was rebuilt 2 years ago and I probably only put like 10 000 km = about 6000 miles on it since then.

Where would be the best place to have one installed in my Region
I'm in Canada/Ontario/Ottawa

Or is this possible to install on my own? or with some help from a friend with a garage shop?

Is install this myself dangerous for explosions? and get you get an Instruction manual on how to do it when orderinga kit?

Thanks!

-It all just depends on how patient you are about finding the parts or the kit. Mine cost me $800 (parts only) when it was all said and done and I did some serious shopping and got some great deals on my parts.

-Hard to say for sure, but keep in mind that anything you do to the engine to make it produce more will most likely decrease the life span of your engine. The severity will just depend on what you do and how often you do it. Rule of thumb-If you cant afford to fix it when you break it, dont do it.

-I did my own install on a daily driver over a period of 2 months while I collected parts and wrenched on weekends. Depending on what you get and how you get it, most manufacturers have pretty good directions on their website. A few people have also posted some install pics during their projects. IMO if you can do your own tune-up, you can install it. Just take your time to understand why and what you are doing.

-Technically I suppose you can blow something up since some kits are wet kits and require playing with fuel lines. If you use logic and common sense while following directions, it can be installed safely.

I bought a NX kit, it was a breeze to install. Others have had good luck with TNT and NOS kits. It just all depends on your preference and what you want from a kit.

Good luck.

A good Nitrous setup with all the bells and whistles ran me about $1,400
Came with a bottle heater, blow down tube, window switch, a set of every pill set, and a digital control panel. I later added a couple gauges to monitor the system.

I hade the system installed by a local performance shop for another $300.

I bought an NX Wet kit. You want a wet kit no matter what (sprays fuel in addition to nitrous in your intake). It seems dangerous, but its not.

The only thing I ever worry about with this system is if my connections to the fuel system (via the fuel test port on the fuel rail) ever leaked... you'd have a fire. For that reason, i have a fire extinguisher, but ive never had a problem.

I run 100 shot nitrous. I should add that NX's fuel side jetting is too conservative (rich), I put in one size smaller fuel side nozzle on the dyno. A/F ratios were a still safe-for-nitrous 11.4:1. Hitting the nitrous (triggered by bottle open, WOT, MSD window switch in range) provides a little boost.
It increased my trap speeds 11 MPH in the 1/4 dropping me from 13.3 to 12.4.

I do not feel nervous about having a nitrous tank behind my seat. One of the only ways you could get in trouble would be if you were 'dumb' enough to leave the system on, left the bottle open, and you're one of those persons that hold the gas pedal to the floor (triggering WOT, and the nitrous at idle) while starting the car.

I do not worry about the nitrous tank rupturing in the unfortunate event of a collision. Rather, I worry about it coming lose and hitting me causing injury.

You would have to bypass the safety systems (liek the rupture disk).

I bought all the bells and whistles NX kit. The remote opener, automatic heater, purge valve (rarely use this since it wastes expensive nitrous), MSD window switch, bottle blanket to insulate the heater, 3-switch panel, fuel pressure safety switch, etc. cost me about $1100 from racenet performance (i think it was somewhere in texas).

Installation is simple, but if you want to make it look right (since its a Vette), plan on puttting some time into doing stuff like using plastic corrugated hose around wire bundles so you dont have wires showing everywhere when you open the hood.

My engine is a 396 with 11.3:1 CR. Is this too high to use Nitrous?
Thanks

Nitrous love high c/r. If you look at drag cars. running 13.5 c/r and shoot 400hp shot. You have nothing to worry.
