Limp home mode-what is it? and do I have it on my late 86?

It a mode the ECM will go into if certain faults are detected. Yes the 86 ECM (165) has it. There are a couple fault modes. When in either of these modes, you should get a Check Engine light. When operating in this mode, the engine does not operate in closed loop mode. Default settings from the CalPak are used for spark and fuel. These of course are not optimal values, but enough to keep the engine running.
The modes are explained very well in the factory service manual.

this also applies for all (if not, most) electronically controlled trannys. in the worst cases it will release the torque converter clutch and force the gear usually to 3rd. depending on the failure mode you may have some limited manual shifting ability.
