It's a code 41 (cylinder select error) and the friggin thing always shows up simultaneously as a Code 52 (fuel Calpak).
The only real symptoms is that the car misses intermittently. I un-do the battery.. clear the codes.. then they re-appear after the car is in closed loop or about after a 10 minute ride.
The manual says to check the ECM or make sure the prom is plugged in properly or check for a ground loose on terminal D3 of the ECM. Duh. What else could it be??
Anyone have any practical feedback? Thanks!
p.s. the car has had a fresh tune-up of plugs, wires, dist cap, etc. The same issue still occurs.
Check for corrosion - did you have a heater core failure or evaporator housing plug up subjecting the passenger side to moisture? You might want to check the Service Bulletins too. You can get the titles at http://www.alldata.com or try www. nhtsa.gov - otherwise, with a 52 & a 41, the chip and/or the ECM is probably bad, assuming it's fully seated.
There's a little more to this deal than we've heard so far.
"Someone" has replaced the EPROM or the ECM with one for a V6 vehicle.
I did the same thing with my 91.
Got ahold of an ecm for a V6 and installed it on there.
Sure enough, code 41 Cylinder Select Error. I could disconnect the battery and the code would go away for about 3 or 4 minutes on the next start then pop up again.
EDIT:
BTW: I believe you have an EPROM and a CALPAK in your 85 ECM.....
Probably the wrong CALPAK. They all "look" alike.
The CALPAK contains the 'limp home' parameters for the engine.
It's probably the wrong one.
code 41 cyl select indicates that the ecm is pinned wrong, the ecms fit numerous vehicles V8 and 6 cyl. the V8 calls for grounding D3, check the ground on this pin on the harness side...check the quality of the ground first..it should be engine grounded. Frank, let us know.
I'm having a tough time determining where "Pin D3" is located. The '85 ECM has two connectors.. one is larger than the other. It's easy enough to see 1,2,3,4 and so on.. but "Row D" is a mystery.
Is the Calpak the little chip directly adjacent to the Eprom? Both are re-seated and yes, the car does have a "remanufactured" ECM.
FWIW, IIRC the '85 has the DIP chip (PROM) inside a secondary plastic carrier, which has an extra set of contacts. You might need to clean those too(?). HTH
Ahhhhhh  The wonderful world of the internet! In first reading some of the replies I did not get the jist of what the heck someone mentioned "6 cylinder" for. I was thinking "How in the world could GM throw a computer in a performance car that was also used in a 6-cylinder truck?"
Well, I'll be damned.. That Pin D3 is THE selector for determining what car that biyatch is installed in. GROUND = 8 Cylinder !!
