I found a thread over in the Gen Disc Community about maf screens. I'd heard about removing the screens but hadn't heard anything definitive enough to make me want to put at risk a $300.00 part...until...I read and confirmed this link... http://www.geocities.com/jgkov/MAFMod.html
... I've been up a while guys and I didn't take notes but (surfing several websites) these numbers appear to be accurate. So I went out to the car and took the maf off and before I could talk myself out of it again I removed the screens. It took all of maybe 15 minutes from unlocking the door, opening the hood, removing the maf, taking it to my work bench, removing the screens, cleaning it up, reinstalling it and putting the key in the ignition. I quick trip down to the hiway and ... WOW... SHE BREATHES! Before this mod I was only getting about 4800rpm out of her and that took what I thought was too long...I was tach'ing 5500 UP the on ramp before the merging lane! I like it!
A big  to this mod performance wise. The only question now is longevity.
I've been hesitant to perform this mod... The information I've seen implies the purpose of the screens is not to keep debris from the MAF elements, (the air filter does that function) but to smooth the airflow through the MAF... So I've wondered what a 'compromise' kind of mod would do, like leaving the front screen in place, and only removing the rear screen.??!? Anyone else ever considered this??
I'd thought about just pulling the rear screen and leaving the front screen for protection. Are the screens different between a L98 and an LT1? I can't see how my screens would staighten out the airflow, they look like what you'd see in a screen door or window, really flat like that.

I was wondering the same thing! :yesnod:
Being a little more nuts thans most, I'm in the middle of a compromise to your compromise. I'm removing every second and third screen element so that the opening will now be 1/4" instead of a 1/16". If I don't go blind before I finish, I'll post a picture when done. I actually got this idea off the Lingenfelter web site. Look at their modified MAF.
If you look at those screens I would say it does more to screw up the airflow than straighten it out. I have to say its for protection of the element and not the airflow. But maybe the engineer figured that one out after a ripper then night before.
I have not done it yet....want to just cant bring myself to do it. :cry
I removed only my rear screen. Unfortunately I have no seat of the pants comparison because I also installed the procharger 10psi at the same time! I left my front in because its downstream of the supercharger and felt it was a safety to leave the front screen. I do however love the idea of removing some of the wires while still affording a little protection- great idea! Im gonna have to do mine.
Was talking with my buddy...Mr Goodwrench... He pulled out an ancient looking manual from his bookshelf. I read where the screens are designed to "diffuse" the air flow for more consistent signals to the ECM. Then he asked what took me so long to cut them out? He did say the LS1's suffer when the screens are removed but the L98's really come alive. Noting the difference in CFM rating before and after. He mentioned it would be in my best interest now to install a smooth snorkel ahead of the maf from the air cleaner to clean up the flow and reduce turbulence as much as possible. I asked him about some of the reservations that have been raised on this forum. He told me that the screens are not designed for protection but for "diffusing" and back in the day it was felt that the screens were over engineered from detroit resulting restricted air flow...his advice cut and run...and clear the 'puter. :seeya

Yes they are different L98 vs. LT1. LT1 has only one which is in front and it is not flat its about 1/2" in thickness with a small honeycomb pattern to it.
Ask him how MAF screen removal effects the LT1. Just curious. I think the LT1 screen helps more than hurts.

yes indeed, they are "air straightening screens", not debris screens.
yes indeed, they hurt perfomance, however the MAF is designed to read straightened air, not unstraightened air.
The LS6 engineers were mandated to redesign the MAF so it could correctly read unstraightened air in the Z06.
and lastly I have found bees and other debris in my MAF screen, so I choose to leave the screens in.

If you found large enough debris and bees in your maf screens, I think it is time to start using an air filter?
