I know everybody says this but, It's all going to depend on what you want to do with the car. I am looking into buying or building a 396 short block. Any builder or parts recomendations?
If you wait another month, I'll give you my opinion. It's pretty obvious who I chose.
I also had good dealings with Nick Norris from Nu-Tek Motorsports.
I chose MORE Performance because I wanted to get other work done (trans, TC and tuning) and wanted to deal with 1 place.
Osh (Mike) from MORE Performance has been great and extremely responsive. It's worth your time to speak with him about your combo. He'll build something strong and reliable for you.
My buddy went with Nu-Tek for his 396. It ships back to him this Wednesday. Expecting 410+ RWHP and 440+ RWTQ through his 95 A4. His dealings have been very pleasant, they just took at little longer than expected (what machine shop doesn't?) http://www.nu-tekmotorsports.com/

Keep us up to date on your buddy's Nu-Tek project. I'm anxious to hear about his experiences since Nu-Tek was on a short list of builders that I considered for my project.
Chuck Wasserott (Wasserott on the Forum) had a 396 LT4 from MORE on his 94 6-spd. If I'm not mistaken, he made somewhere around 415 rwhp with this setup and I don't think the cam was too radical. This was a car setup for road racing. Since I already have MORE's top-end, I will probably go with their short block as well when I am ready.
