Recently found one of my mufflers off a 1989 vette hanging down (looks like the pipe was rusted through). Any thoughts I what I should replace it with (cost including installation must be less than $300.00). Looking for a nice balance between power and looks. Do the chrome tips 'hold up' in the real world and worth the extra cost ?? If you know of a particular site that has great prices, please include with reply
Any competent muffler shop should be able to remove the old mufflers and build you a set of "muffler eliminators" (no muffler, just straight pipes). They won't be too loud for city driving and cruising, but they will sound nice at WOT!
I would think you could get that done for around $100 with some nice tips added. Most chrome tips from muffler shops I have seen won't last more more than a few years even with polishing and a coat of wax on them. Stainless pipe is more costly, but should last much longer.
If you want that "Heavy Chevy" kinda sound...allow me to recommend 40 series Flowmasters.
If you add the LT-1 Tips, from the rear they have that factory appearance. From the side the bottoms of the Flows are visible. I don't know about you, but I like that. The resonance is acceptable inside the car and they breathe very well.
Your favorite muffler shop probably has them in stock and can install them for under your $300.00 spending limit. However you mentioned that your exhaust system is rusty. You may have to install a lot of new pipe. That will kick your spending reserve to the curb. :seeya
There are a couple of related threads in General Discussion, lot's of postiive comments about Flowmaters. The muff elims noted earlier are great. I did them a few years ago with stainless tips (stainless is the onely way to go for looks and longitivity). Since my 3.73's were installed 6 weeks ago the reasonance at 75 mph (2,500 rpms) is unbearalbe so I'm looking at Flowmaster x-pipe and flowthru's.
Good luck in finding the right combo for you, elims are a great choice!
I had Dynomax Turbo’s installed on my 94, 6 speed for $300.00, and that included $100.00 for chrome ZR1 tips. I used Rainbow Muffler shop which I think is a nationwide store.
Walker Race Magnums. I've had 3 C4's and can attest that Flowmasters drone like crazy at around 1800-2000 rpm. The Race magnums look like flowmasters w/a welded case, sound great, don't drone. I have full length headers and no cats, and the car is loud but doesn't drive you out.
