After removing the pump and all of the other hoses, etc. I still have a metal pipe that is sticking straight up on the very front of the engine by the waterpump, belt, pully area. I cannot see how to remove it or where it goes because it goes under the engine but above the frame and out of sight. How did the rest of you guys get rid of it? I checked it for vaccum and/or pressure and none is present.
There are two bolts under the motor that hold it to the engine. They are not easy to see or even get to, but it can be done. I did it to two of my previous cars already (LT1).
Only problem is, even after removing the bolts the tube is hard to take out. I reccommend a sawzall or hack saw two split it into two pieces for MUCH easier removal.
If we are talking about the same tube (aluminum, air pump hose went to it) and the same motor (LT1) it comes up and both sides of the engine. It may not look like it if you only removed the air pump, but on the pass side there will be another hose that comes off as pasrt of the air system. Wiggle the tube on the driver's side and you should be able to see it slightly wiggling onthe pass side too. The tube is horseshoe shaped somewhat...that's what makes it hard to remove.
Thanks guys, but this is on an L98 and it is metal (black) not aluminum. It is not the one going to the "cat". It is bolted to the block securely, you can't wiggle it. It is directly at the front of the engine, not driver or passenger side. Any L98 guys out there know what I mean?
I know what you mean and have the same issue. I did the kit and that one pipe is still uncovered. I have been ignoring it but am curious. It is the one on the AC side of the engine?? Under where the solinoids<sp> where?? The kit did not have anything to go on there and did not address that one. I still don't understand why the kit kicked the alternator way out to keep the stock belt instead of keeping it in tight and giving a part number for a shorter belt.
thats the air pump exhaust pipe. dont remember the technical name, but it is where the air from the pump goes when its not going to the cat. cant for the life of me remember what its bolted to , but it only has a nut. its on a stud for something else.
Mine stayed in there for a year after I did the elimination. I did cut some of it out with a hacksaw. I can't remember well enough to describe how to get it out, I just remember having almost all the accesories off the front during my engine replacement before it fell out. I remember thinking that it would have been alot of work just to get that little bugger out of there.
So, it can be done but you will have to work for it. I wish I could be more specific for ya, I just wasn't paying much attention to it at the time.
it's some type of thing for the air pump stuff. It bolts to the water pump stud on the a/c bracket. To remove it you'll need to loosen the two bolts on the water pump studs and pull it forward. The bottom of it just exits near the tensioner pulley and the crank pulley.
actually, look at this pic and tell me if it's piece 'A' or 'B'...
A is just a pipe that ends between the tensioner pulley and crank pulley. B is the pipe from the air pump to the solenoids. I'm sure you're talking about 'A' but wanted to be sure. Both of them can be removed with the two water pump stud nuts indicated in the photo.
Craig is correct. I removed mine from my 90 L98 coupe. Its a vent or drain or some other kind of useless damn thing that CAN be removed :jester If I remember correctly it'll have some sort of diffuser or something on the end too.
i looked it up. its called a silencer. has a type of muffler on the end.
just dig in there and take it off, then let us know exactly which stud its on, since we all seem to have memory issues. some day , someone will find this post in the archives and thank you. :jester
Thanks everyone, looks like a project for this weekend.
Craig, I am not sure about the picture, it came through real dark but I believe you are right with the "A". Thanks for the other work lateley too. I switched ISPs and don't have your e-mail address to send a personal note.
