I've been having some problems with the fuel injection system on my 86 and it looks like the MAF sensor may be bad. The guy that works on fuel injection systems mentioned that I could upgrade to an L96? or something 96 for about $300 and do away with the MAF sensor while adding about 40 hp. Can anyone enlighten me on this upgrade and the upside/downsides to it? I thought I would consider it if repairs to current stock system run more than $100. Opinions please!
I dont have a clue what your mechanic is smoking, nor what hes talking about.
You can switch from MAF to Speed Density, but it wont add 40hp. It probably wouldnt add anything. It adds great difficulty to tuning the engine, and not many people want to fool with it.
You just need a new MAF, it would cost about $250 or so new.
Go read the "intro" post on the C4 tuning section.
-I 2nd the motion that your Mechanic is smoking something, or maybe you just mis-heard him. The upgrade is he refering to is the 90-91 MAP system.
-I also second, the motion that if he thinks changing the ECM system is going to add 40 HP, he his full of it. Unless he's talking about adding +40hp to your broke motor...then it's feasible.
