This is exactly what a lean condition would cause. The extra fuel is burning up in the cat thus eventually melting it. If your manifold is glowing that is pretty much a tell tale sign your cats are clogged.

correct me if i'm wrong.. but a lean condition means there is not enough fuel in the exhuast gas.. too much fuel is a rich condition.. The o2 sensor is before the cat converter and its reading rich.. Im just wondering if a plugged converter could set a lean condition code.. (too little fuel)

Yup, true, I probably shouldn't respond to post when I'm half asleep at the keyboard.

It is possible that the O2 sensor is bad. The "circuit" simply reacts to the current "value" of the oxygen sensor (rich or lean) by taking the opposite action. So if the sensor indicates "lean", the circuit will add fuel and vice-versa. So your engine could be running rich dump fuel in the cat, but the O2 sensor could be bad showing a lean condition.

Could a plugged cat cause the engine to run rough and stall as soon as the engine warms up but not before?

It is possible but it sounds to me that a throttle sensor may be out of whacked, but I'm only guessing on that. Any case look here for a little more info on clogged cats.
