Well, it looks like the next disaster is about to occur to keep my car down. The differential was making some interesting noises last night. Well at least I think it was that. Some nice metal on metal noises only on acceleration. Nothing when turning a corner, but there is some more pronounced clicking/clinking when the car goes from overrun to acceleration or from a stop. Wheel bearings and u-joints are all tight. The fluid is about 300-400 miles old.
Then again, the damn thing is about to cross 180,000 miles. It hasn't exactly been treated nice since I got it at 98,500. :) In fact it might of last night I wasn't watching the odometer.

I recently had mine out...I tried going to 3.73s but had trouble. The original gears are back in and the tech who did it said they look new...amazing with almost 195,000 miles on 'em.

Good info here:
Yeah i've been reading that one. I already spoke with Jeb quickly a couple weeks ago about having mine cryo treated when it comes out for work or if i get another.
Re: How long should a differential last? :| (scorp508)
My 87 has 186k on the differential and it has a slight amount of slack but otherwise ok. My 74 I bought new and sold it at 214k with the original differential and nothing wrong with it except a slight amount of slack.

Did yours just start doing this? Mine didn't make a lick of noise until I added fluid. Now I've got clunks and tings and all kinds of crap coming from the rear. :(

It was making noise before, but I thought (more like was praying) it might of been the rusty spindle syndrome. Sure doesn't seem like it now.
A friend of mine has a set of 4.10s I could get at a fair price, but we all know I'm one of the first to spew the "3.07s is the best" for the engine combo I have. In the same breath there aren't that many stick cars with this combo so it might help.
Re: How long should a differential last? :| (CORKVETTE1)
took mine in at 110,000 miles and there wasn't anything needed to replace ...all was in factory spec so they just put it back to gether and then I paid the $550.00 bill. :nopity
Re: How long should a differential last? :| (CORKVETTE1)
at 115 mph in 4th with 410s you will be taching 6100 rpm
Well.... I cross the MPH line in 3rd @ about 6000 now with the 3.07s. Once tuned and launching good I hope to be in the 113-114 area N/A. So I'll either be looking for 4th or going through the traps on the rev limiter I guess if I can get it there as is with 3.07s.
If I went with 4.10s that looks like it means I'd be looking to grab another gear for a nitrous pass. I don't know if I want that situation. If I'm going to run a 100 shot you'd expect to see ~10mph gain correct? My two choices after 4th are either going to 3rd with OD engaged for 0.90 or just engage OD in 4th for 0.68. The 0.90 puts me back at 5400 @ the 115mph shift and then works up to 5950 @ 125.72 whereas the 0.68 would put me back to 4150 @ the 115mph shift and work back to 4500 @ 124.85.
If forced to go for another gear...
Going from 1.00 to 0.90 keeps me higher in the HP band, but lower in torque. Going from 1.00 to 0.68 keeps me higher in the torque band, but lower in HP.
A 3.73 would puts me at 126.5 @ 6100 in 4th and keeps all that above nonsense out of the ordeal.
