I don't think its actually back firing when you let off the gas on a car without cats. Cars ran without cats for years without severe backfiring problems. Maybe someone else can verify but my car makes burbling noises with no cats or mufflers on and its not backfiring.

The popping is combustion of unburnt hydrocarbons occuring in the exhaust manifolds, or futher down the exhaust system, depending on where the mixture gets enough oxygen to support combustion - it is likely in the exhaust manifold though, as this is the hottest spot to initiate combustion. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is an exhaust leak, just means that on lift throttle, the current calibration is a little rich - a recal is needed. :seeya
