:mad Just got the new mufflers on this morning. MAD bolt ons.....not bolt ons try weld ons at the muffler shop :cuss .
Now since there is more back pressure.....my dash rattles :cuss Is that possible. :mad So I park the car and am admiring my new pipes and I look up front and :cuss there is a puddle of greeeeeeeen stuff just flowing out of :mad my car. Upon further inspection its the lower radiator hose. :reddevil
How the heck do you put a new one on. It looks like I have to take the whole front end off to get to the upper part of the hose by the water pump. :cuss
Nope......can't help. Your '85 is much different than my '93. My pump hose is located right at the top (reverse-flow cooling) making removal simple. Some member has been through this and will respond..........stand by.
If you take off the belt tensioner, it's much easier. Still a PIA, but have patience.
I sliced the hose off the pump and radiator. Remember the radiator outlet is plastic and will break if you push/pull/twist too hard.
I tried both a Gates and Goodyear hose and did not like the fit of either. GM hose fit perfect first time.
Remember to "load" the system with coolant when done.
[edit] Good time to flush the coolant, clean out the overflow tank and add a new pressure cap. If the lower hose is gone, check the rest including the bypass hose and the oil cooler hose if you have one.
I picked one up a Checker. It is braided around the outside but no spring. Shouldnt it have an internal spring. I hate to have to do this more than once :smash:
Got it changed. Took the serp. belt off made if much easier. Did not have to take the tensioner off although it would have made it easier. Took the spring out of the old one and inserted in the new one.
Had to trim the hose a bit on the Rad end to fit by the cross member. I would say on a scale of 1 to 10 this was about a 4.
thanks for the help and advice. "On the road again" :yesnod: :steering: :seeya
Sounds good....I too replaced it on my 86 and I took the tensioner off.For one thing, the clamp up there was so hard to access, that with the tensioner off,it was easy.I also always cut the old hoses off.Just slice and twist and they slide off.
When I replaced my radiator I decided to put new hoses on as well. I had EVERY THING removed from the cross beam forward and I still couldn't get to the hose clamp to take the old one off. Left it on until we took the heads off again. I think they put that hose on the engine and built the rest of the car around it.
