I've been reading through the archives, and see some people using fuel injector cleaner as often as every other fillup. Now, is this necessary??? Also, I have only been driving my car for about 5 months now, but have never run any cleaner through.. I figured it's probably about time with the crap gas in our area... Is Chevron safe for the injectors??? Thanks, in advance
GM specifically recommends against it..having said that my mechanic told me if I just have to put some in to use Chevron's...I broke down and put one bottle in about 18 months ago...nothing since...good luck
Since GM switched to the Rochester injectors with the ball seats instead of the Bosch injectors with pintles ther is no need for an injector cleaner (Re GM).
For the recoed, Chevron high test gas has Techron cleaner in it so if you use the gas you don't need the additive. :seeya :seeya :seeya
Well, my local dealer is the one who recommended Chevron, but, after reading here, I was stuck somewhere in the middle. My '95 doesn't always feel like it has the power that it should.. Then again, I've still yet to feel full throttle!!! Just that it feels kind of sluggish out of the hole some times........
I have heard that both octane boosters and injector cleaners are corrosive. If i were to use them I would try to use the tankful of gas in one day and not let it sit for days or weeks so it would not have time to corrode parts.. Not good for injector windings, rubber gaskets in fuel pump, etc. Some cleaners say on the bottle to change the oil after using their product so wait for the next oil change and use it right before. Guess some of the corrosive chemicals get into the oil plus what ever crap it cleans out of the cylinder/injectors gets into the oil.
I've read (or heard) that the Multec injectors used on the LT1s flow gas over the injector coil to cool it. I believe that this is why they recommend agaist any solvent based cleaners - if the cleaner degrades the insulation on the winding it'll ruin the injector.
