Default 4+3 TV cable adjustment

How do you adjust the cable. The GM manual is vague. TIA

Ummm...what TV cable? My 4+3 doesn't have one. I think it's operated entirely electrically. At least it was in '86.

I've never had to adjust the cable on my '85. Even after pulling the tranny and disconnecting the cable a few times.

Why do you suspect it's the tv cable?

According to the helm manual, you adjust it at the throttle body. It's on page 78-8. I'm not of much help since I've never done it though.

:lurk:

Nope. ECM contol of course and throttle controlled. Look at the engine throttle area. There should be 3 cables. One is from the accelerator pedal. Another is from the cruise control and the third is from the overdrive.

If the trottle valve (TV) cable is misadjusted or missing then damage to the overdrive will occur. The ECM does shift the OD BUT it must be adjusted or the shifts will occur sooner (or later, I forget which). Either way, the OD clutches will suffer and wear out prematurely.

Well, I've had the OD rebuilt as well as the 4 speed and am changing the TV cable for a new one (generic unit since GM obsoleted it). Mine broke. Now I need to adjust it.

Uh oh. I don't have that 3rd cable. This car has been messed with by the previous owner so I'm not surprised.

At least I take it easy on the OD. I never got WOT in OD. I wonder if running WOT even when it's not engaged is being hard on the OD?

Its the normal upshifts and downshifts that will fry the clutches. Are you sure the cable isn't maybe wrapped up behind the engine firewall or under the car? If the cable is gone, hopefully the sealed the hole in the OD. Darrell's Transmissions can tell you the severity of not having the cable; 800-365-1102. You can talk with Brian at SK Speed, 631-957-9427. He can get you the cable.

Yeah, that cable is gone. I don't recall seeing a place for the cable to go on the trans either. Anyone got pics? I cleaned it by hand when I swapped engines last year. The engine I pulled out of it wasn't the stock shortblock either so the previous owner must have funked it up.

bump for GRX.

looks like jmr302 took over this thread!

Look closely at the throttle body in this pic.

The uppermost cable on the throttle lever is for the 4+3.

GRX, did you try the method in the factory manual? It seems clear enough to me.

No hijacking intended, GRX!

I can see a spot for the cable on the throttlebody but don't remember seeing a spot on the trans for a cable. That's what I was wanting a pic of.

No problem! We "4+3" owners need to stick together! :D The location for the cable on the OD is on top of the fluid pan housing; towards the passenger side; on the frontmost corner. If you remove the pan you can see where it enters from the top of the housing. :auto:

But of course, you won't see it on your '86. NO TV!
