Nope. ECM contol of course and throttle controlled. Look at the engine throttle area. There should be 3 cables. One is from the accelerator pedal. Another is from the cruise control and the third is from the overdrive.
If the trottle valve (TV) cable is misadjusted or missing then damage to the overdrive will occur. The ECM does shift the OD BUT it must be adjusted or the shifts will occur sooner (or later, I forget which). Either way, the OD clutches will suffer and wear out prematurely.
Well, I've had the OD rebuilt as well as the 4 speed and am changing the TV cable for a new one (generic unit since GM obsoleted it). Mine broke. Now I need to adjust it.
Its the normal upshifts and downshifts that will fry the clutches. Are you sure the cable isn't maybe wrapped up behind the engine firewall or under the car? If the cable is gone, hopefully the sealed the hole in the OD. Darrell's Transmissions can tell you the severity of not having the cable; 800-365-1102. You can talk with Brian at SK Speed, 631-957-9427. He can get you the cable.
Yeah, that cable is gone. I don't recall seeing a place for the cable to go on the trans either. Anyone got pics? I cleaned it by hand when I swapped engines last year. The engine I pulled out of it wasn't the stock shortblock either so the previous owner must have funked it up.
No problem! We "4+3" owners need to stick together! :D The location for the cable on the OD is on top of the fluid pan housing; towards the passenger side; on the frontmost corner. If you remove the pan you can see where it enters from the top of the housing. :auto:
