How much horsepower are these modifications worth? Shortie headers, high flow cats, corsa exhaust, hyper tech stage II chip, 160 thermostat, K&N filter, custom lid, throttle body bypass, air foil, low drag pulleys. What is your opinion on horsepower gain with these modifications?
Shortie headers 5-10hp
high flow cats, ~5
corsa exhaust, about 10
hyper tech stage II chip, 0hp
160 thermostat, 0hp
Changing the thermostat doesnt give more hp, it allows you to bump timing (which can increase hp) and the L98 engine tends to get better 60' times while running cool.
K&N filter, custom lid, throttle body bypass, ~10
air foil, 0hp
low drag pulleys, some say up to 10 but I'm not sold on this mod yet
I'd like to add that if you believe all the rants from the big corvette parts suppliers etc; you read some phenominal stuff;
Claims of 40hp for removing air pump!
10-15 for cooler thermostadt
10 for TB bypass
40 for a good exhaust
15 for airfoil
etc etc :rolleyes:
Be NICE if it was right, and hey - maybe it is :D
But I think the reality is that it takes a fair bit of real work for real increases...
O/wise I must surely be up towards top fueler HP on mine by NOW!! hehhe
Oh and 10-15 for the K&N (Hope so as thats what I run)
The best is the additive that makes the radiator water give you 10HP+ :)
That stuff seems awfully like what I used to use in the darkroom (Ex photographer) called 'wetting agent' (By ILFORD) - about the same price now I imagine...

For an LT1/4:
Shortie headers = 0HP
High flow cats = 0HP (unless your old cats are clogged)
Corsa exhaust = 5~10HP
Hypertech = 0HP
160* t-stat = 0HP
TB bypass = 1~2HP
K&N with lid = 0~5HP
Airfoil = 0HP
Low drag pullies on an LT1 with camshft driven H2O pump = 1~2 HP (only effects the PS pump)
So all that money/work will add up to ~10HP on a good day.
It's time to hang around here and learn a little bit more before you waste big $$ on snake oil.
Also, take car of the mod lists, what works for an 85-91 L98 isn't always going to work on a 92-96 LT1/4. Examples include high flow cats, MAF screens, AFPR, and pulleys.
I'd start the mod list with rear gears, and if it's an automatic trans, TC and shift kit.
So many people think all those mods give you no HP gains. Well you can see what my mods have done. An A4 300 hp should have about 240 HP at the rear wheels. So I've picked up 42 HP somewhere. I'll have my 1.6 RR's dyno'd next Friday, and the shorty headers go on next Sat. Then I'll have it dyno'd again and I'll post both results.
I have a high-flow cat installed. Vader mentioned up to 5HP gain. Is there actually a gain by using a high-flow cat? I wasn't sure. So, with my setup, (check sig), how much HP increase would be a fair estimate? Obviously, stock is 230HP (cast iron). Oh, will the MSD 8.5mm wires make any diff?

There is a gain from the high flow cat, it really makes more of a difference when theres an engine in front to push the air thru, but for now 0-5hp should be gained. The MSDs wont make any difference unless the old wires were bad. You shouldve gained 6-10hp at the crank from the K&N/cut lid, then about 10-12 for the exhaust. Only way to be sure is dyno testing.
