when i start my car within a minute my alternator gets hot you can put your hand on it but just for a second or two the alternator shows 14.1 volts any ideas?????
hi, i only ran it for about 4 minutes and it was showing 14.1 to 13.9 i havent started the car in about 5 days the battary is new and it started but it was going dead i did have the doors open i did notice the interior lights looked brite this is what i did i installed a fuel pressure gauge in the car ,spark plug wires cap rotor new plugs everything was fine before this i'm not saying this is the cause but now i have a problem and i did notice after a minute and a half the idle surges this car is in perfect tune so i don't know if it's related to the alternaor
Disconnect the battery and hook a DMM between the negative lead and ground to measure leakage current. You should read no more than 10s of mV with all lights, accessories and engine off.
Drive the Vette for a while and then note the charging voltage; it should settle into the 13+ Volt range.
okay but can the alternator still be bad even if it's showing the write voltage like i said it get's hot i don't want to burn anything out the alternator is original
It should not run too hot to touch under normal operation. If it is supplying excess current just after startup it might get warm but should cool down as the battery becomes fully charged and current flow from the alt is reduced.
thanks for the help i have one more question i turned the key in the on position and heard a buzzing whinning sound the volts read low on my gauge but my lights are brite????
