Default Max.boost before needing intercooler

I'm getting real tired of fighting the heat....and I know bart that it can be done, but at this point I'm only boosting 8 psi ( when it's not slipping, usually 5 psi) do I need to intercool? :banghead:

At 5 or 6 you should be o.k. with a good tune. Vortech's and Carroll's kits are non-intercooled @ 6psi.

I've got a book I bought off ebay on turbocharging..I can't find it right now but it's got a section on intercooling and says that there is no improvement by intercooling under 10 psi of boost....I beleave vortechs system for 8 psi can be ordered with out there water injection and I know you can get prochargers with out intercooling at 8 psi....I just suckered for the msd unit and I'm seeing no improvement over stock ignition....am I blocking my radiator for nothing?

Oh by the way I'm at 9.0 to 1 or 9.5 to 1 compression.... I've read both for a stock 85.

How much boost you can run non intercooled will depend on a lot of things so their is no standard answer. Max. boost depends on the compression ratio / total timing /Octane of the fuel being used / What is the ambient temperature/
Engine coolant temp./ What size blower and blower design also makes a difference. How many times have you read I don't need a D1 I"m not looking to make that much power. Wrong thinking because they buy a small blower and then spin the hell out of it and it pumps heat. If you ever looked at a compressor map it will show you where the blower is most efficient operating out side of that zone will make heat so what blower you are using will determine to some degree how much boost you can run. Before you install a pulley to run 6lb boost and remove the intercooler ask your self will I be happy with that level of performance. I don't need to tell you what the cure is I think you already know that. I drove mine about 35 miles today with ac on highest engine temp was 179 and i have a stock radiator :)

Hows your ankle bart? maybe we had better put you to work and get you to build some of those killer sperco intercoolers..............I'm in :jester it's the only way I'm going to get my engine temps down, I drive with my eyes glued to the engine temp all the time ........ I can be happy with the 8 psi and but not 6psi I just wanted to see if anybody out there is running with out the intercooler. I've got some lingfelter heads so my hp and temps are just going to continoue to climb. :chevy

The ankle is much better I"m able to walk now but what is even better is I can clutch the vette :D I think you could run 8lb without the intercooler if you where to run it on a steady diet of VP 103 unleaded. Don't know what it runs where your at but it is $4:50 per gal. here. :cry
