On my 85 I took out both screens and the heat sinks, as a result of the TPIS claims.

my HP went form 230HP up to @ 400HP,,,,, or,,,,,, maybe that was the new 406 engine that gave me the increase:D
NO NO; It MUST be the maf screens that did it!!!

Keep in mind that the 85 MAF has different construction than the 86-89 style. Removing the screens isn't as easy as just popping them out like on the newer ones. The metal screens are sandwiched right into the plastic, so you've got to cut them out, then use a file to smooth all of the burrs and left-over pieces that you're guaranteed to cut yourself on 20 times. I did it on my 85 MAF and it worked fine for a while, then started chucking Code 34s here and there. Dunno if it's time was just up or if cutting the screens out caused an early death, but since I didn't feel a damn bit of difference, I wouldn't do it again.

I did my rear screen yesterday. Was dead easy to do with pliers and the strands just rolled over them and pulled out; no frayed edges or anything.

I doubt just removing the rear (Which is all I'm going to do) would cause anything premature unless tiny bugs have learnt to fly backwards out of the TB...MAYBE the rear screens' there as a spark arrestor (THERE's an interesting new thread!) :bs

Thanks for that! Although it's now hindsight 'cause I removed the rear screen ONLY before I read this; it PROBABLY would have scared me off doing it tho...My last post re spark arrestor may not be that far off track by what I just read.

Interesting site he has; I like the TB bypass idea of his; air cooling it!
Sounds like something I would have done once (And now prob WILL do); but why not run the hose down to a 12v fridge and have icy air flowing thru TB? hehe Hey, I guess some great ideas are born of stupid comments!

Personally; My sense of logic is sometimes delayed!

I cut my screens out and the two longest fins (was impatient, didn't want to "waste time" cutting out the others) on my remanufactured unit, but that was before I ever drove it w/ the new engine in. So, I really can't tell you if there was a difference or not.

Well, that's a nice little webpage, but that doesn't mean it's true. The author's explanation of maximum flow and restrictions is WRONG, for lack of a better term.

Maybe I just think i'm a wise guy cuz I have a degree, but don't be so easily impressed by his fancy-pants verbage. He bashes the MAF de-screeners for not backing up their claims, yet he doesn't back up all his claims about unsteady flow and turbulence and unmetered airflow. It's all heresay.

The MAF screens are a significant restriction to airflow. It doesn't matter what TB you have. Stand in front of your screen door on a windy day... then open it, and you'll feel the difference.

Air is slippery, stationary steel mesh is NOT.

FWIW, I removed the rear MAF screen. Can I feel the difference? No.

LOL, his only reasoning for keeping the rear screen is to protect the MAF element in the case of a backfire. Yeah... sure..... I tell you what. I'll stick a 1/4 stick of dynamite in a trash can, and you put a thin steel mesh over the top of it, stick your face right over it, and watch it explode.

I read that page...seems more "preachy" than informative...

I have removed the screens from bosch unit in my 85. Could I feel the difference?

YES! As I posted previously I was able to turn the engine to only 4800 rpm with the screens intact. After removing them I can turn the engine to 5500rpm and maybe more but that's as far as I have taken it. :seeya
