MAF.......code 33
have an intermittent problem on the 85.......it will run fine and occaisionally, have a burst of running like sh** with a check engine light.........code 33, MAF high voltage. my question is this.....the book says the air flow into the MAF is caused by a 'burn off module' what are the chances this is the problem????? I dont want to go drop $300 on a MAF if i dont know for sure its bad....

Have you tested the burn off module?
Warm the car to operating temp. Then gently disconnect the maf from the air filter ducting and place it to the side. I like to use a mirror when no one is able to help. Place the mirror where you can see inside the maf from the drivers seat. Turn the ignition off. after a very few seconds you will see the maf light up and glow for a split second. If you don't see the light show you have a bad module.
Also another low tech test is to warm the car to operating temp (closed loop) and tap (gently) on the maf. If there is a change in the idle you have a problem. This will also set the code...
Hope it's just a glitch for ya! Oh! check the damn wiring connection under the thing...sometimes the get a bit corroded or dirty...just hoping for the simple fix! :seeya

Its either the MAF or the burn-off module. Only problem is that the module is buried inside your pass. side dash, and is unique to your year, making it more expensive than it should be.
Test the MAF first, then replace what it needs.

doin my best to test it.......cleared the codes, still none thrown, i tapped it and nothing happened.........dont have a mirror or another set of hands so ll look inside a little later.....

Just about anything shiny will do if wait until after it's dark or test it in a dark garage. The maf burnoff is kinda bright and all you're looking for is the glow to let you know it's working...

On my '86 I was chasing this same problem and lik you, didn't want to spend $ for a new MAF. I ended up swapping my 2 relays on the firewall and I ended up with a 51 (if I remember right) for the burn-off. That proved one bad relay.
Went to AutoZone and paid $11 for a new one. Good luck.
