I want to put one in my vette, but not just some big one that I buy at a hardware store. I want it to bolt down and be compact and preferably chrome or something classy, since it will be inside the car. Any suggestions? where to place it? etc. where it bolts down the best? etc.
Buy a halon extinguisher (they go around $100) and mount it to the front of the driver's seat with a Brey-Krause mount. That's what I have and couldn't be happier.

I'm not real wild about where the BK bar puts the exinguisher. You should be able to reach it, if you are fully strapped in. Which means it's mounted on a roll bar running between the seats.
Check out http://www.r-dracing.com. I'll try to post a pic of mine later. It mounts in front of the drivers seat. Easy to get to, never in the way.
Great for cockpit and indoor fires. COMPLETELY useless if there is any wind. Works by displacing the oxygen, removing the fires fuel. If you're worried about an underhood fire get a decent ABC extinguisher and have the peace of mind knowing that the fire is smothered and can't flare if the wind blows. Yeah it's messy, but so is a fire.
I would think if the hood is up, there wouldn't be any problems with the wind. Anyway, I'll take my chances trying to save what I have invested in the car.
If you're just looking for some peace of mind and not using the car on the track, I would just buy one that will fit in your passenger side rear storage compartment. That's what I did once I rebuilt my fuel rail and saw that a bunch of "o" rings pressed together was all that was holding back 40+ lbs of fuel pressure in a plastic/fiberglass car...
As does my "other "vette - I thought I would reply to share a story about an engine fire I had last year - pulled the halon system which sprays out under the hood and inside on the driver as well - I didnn't get out of the car because it wasn't safe to where I had stopped, and after about 15 seconds or so I became REALLY lightheaded, like I had taken in a major dose of nitrous oxide. This went on for several minutes until the 10lb system completely discharged. When the safety crew reached me I didn't even know they were pulling me out of the car until I was out on the ground. Scary stuff. I guess the moral to the story is if you discharge a built-in Halon system, get out of the car!
Check out this site: http://www.vetteworksonline.com Dan has brackets for C4's that bolt to the front of the passenger side seat using the floor bolts. He has Halotron extinguislers in both red and chrome and different sizes of extinguisers. I have a chrome Halotron setup in my 92 vert and one in my 87 coupe.
The brackets are heavy steel and powder coated for a nice looking finish ad durability.
I have this setup on both seats. Mounts thru the fiberglass in the seat base & then I just use large stainless fender washers & nylocks to back it all up. Passes Tech Insp every time.
Some inspectors don't like them mounted up very high...as they become a projectile right at head height in an accident.
I've had to use the powder type before in my RX7, and I'm sure the results were better than what the fire would have done, but it was one big mess....
Check out a product called Cold Fire. You can get it from Machines and More. It puts out the fire and will not allow it to start up again. You can use it to cool off your motor to work on it also.
auto zone, advance, and others, plus lots of web sites cary an APC brand thats compact, comes in chrome, anodized red, & other colors. its a abc type about 50 bucks everywhere I've seen. Its about 10 ins long compaired to the regular size 12 or 13 in.
