Default C4 starter, assuming there's only one type?

Went to start the engine for the big finshing ceremony, whammo, nothing. Ta-da! had to laugh so as not to cry....

I thought everything was hooked up properly, can someone give me the basics? How many terminals on the starter? What goes where? Is there a ground strap? :chevy

The starter grounds itself to the block, so no strap.

Do you hear a tick at least? If so, then the starter is definitely getting juice, just might be a bad starter.

Another option is the key. The resistor in it, or the ignition will go bad. See if you have a SECURITY light flashing when you try and start it. This causes the engine to do nothing. If so, do a search on the forum and find which resistence you have and bridge the system. If this works, you know it is a key or ign. cylinder problem.

Oh, and make sure you have 12 volts. 10 is enough to make everything work, except the starter.

Two wires, one to the positive battery and one to the ECM I believe, coming off of the iginiton cylinder.

Actually I think there are 3 different starters between all the C4s. :)

84-87 big honking one.
88-96 small mini-starter
90-95 ZR1, its own breed under the plenum.

Scorp- if this one on the 88 is a mini starter, I can only imagine how big the "honking big" ones are!

Might make me want to move to the top of a hill to bump-start the car.

Errr..nix that, as I remember standing next to many a car or motorcycle at the bottom of that hill scratching my head thinking "oh crap" as I instinctively reach for the AAA card in my wallet.... Maybe I should buy a 12v charger!

kman0066- I don't even think I heard the solenoid click. Which is what led me to believe it's the wiring. Though the battery sat for 8 months or so, I had another car's battery hooked up to aid the initial start. The Vette's gauge read 12.5 volts after a good 15 minute charge session (see stupid battery question #1)

I can remember times when I'd leave the interior light on overnight, have 10.8 volts and still hear the solenoid click, just not enough juice to turn the flywheel.

I guess it's totally possible that the battery crapped the bed so bad during storage that both reactors at Three Mile Island can't put out enough power to charge it.

Stupid battery question #1: Given the crappy battery in the Vette, would jumping a running car to it while trying to start help at all? Or is that battery so bad-off that it can't even be recharged?

If the battery has a shorted cell sometimes even jumping from another vehicle won't to it. However, if you are showing 12+ volts, it doesn't sound like a shorted cell. Could be a combination of not enough charge and just about shot starter.

If you aren't getting a click, it sounds like trouble elsewhere.
