Default Started my 383 buildup!!! Pics within>>>>>>

Finally I got a chance to get my hands dirty after having my 383 shortblock sitting in the garage for quite some time collecting dust!

Here's the 383 shortblock in all its glory:

A couple facts and about the block. I bought this shortblock used but it only has a couple thousand miles of use. Looks brand new! It was assembled by Scott's performance shop in Aurora, IL. Internally included is a stroker crankshaft, ofcourse. Don't know what make it is though. GM Pink rods, and SRP forged flat top pistons. Oh yeah and 4 bolt mains. One good thing about the block being slightly used is there is no break in period! LOL

Todays project included installing the camshaft:

Specs on this cam are as follows:

Hydraulic flat tappet
.496/.520 lift with 1.6 rockers
224/234 duration
112 CL

Cam all greased up ready to install:

And finally, cam installed with Pete Jackson "Quieter" gear drive:

Stay tuned tomorrow as I continue assembley on the 383..........

 how long did you leave the short block sitting around? did you do anything to prevent surface rust?

Wow I has just finished reviewing my post and already got a reply.

 how long did you leave the short block sitting around? did you do anything to prevent surface rust?
It's been sitting around a month or so. But it felt like eternity! Anyway. I lubed it up really well when I first got it so there is absolutely no rust anywhere.

What heads and cam are you going to use? 4 Bolt I assume. Looks pretty good.
Good Luck in the build. Oops the cam sounds great. should be fine.
Good foundation.

Tomorrow I start tearing down my 79 for a 383 rebuild. What h.p. do you think you'll have and is your Vette a daily driver or racer?

Dumb question: To build a 383, do you bore out your 350 or stroke it or both? Why not a 396?

Bore: 4.030"
Stroke: 3.75"

A 396 requires a 3.875" stroke and there are only forged cranks for that which get mighty expensive compared to a nice Scat 9000 cast 3.75" crank that goes for $249 and can handle 600hp.

A 383 is a 350 bored .30 over and using a 400ci crankshaft. Don't know about a 396 though.

I'm hoping for 400-450HP. It's a daily driver.

Aren't the 383s supposed to have dished pistons? I thought there was more compression due to the longer stroke. That looks like 10cc with the releifs?

Use can use 1 pt higher compression if using aluminum heads. I'm debating the 383/396 issue for a daily driver.

C/R is determined by many things, he said he had flat top pistons, those are not flat top.

http://www.newcovenant.com/speedcraf...ssionratio.htm

with 67 cc heads and a .021 head gasket to keep your QUENCH distance close to correct youll have about STATIC 10.2 cpr (if you use those felpro #1003 head gaskets that are only designed for cast iron heads and that are .041 thick and have a 4.166 bore)(youll be at about 9.76 cpr)your DYNAMIC COMPRESSION WILL VARY WITH THE CAM YOU PICK,
BTW that calc site has one bad instruction, the piston should have a NEG.# for valve notchs and a POSSITIVE number for a piston dome, the pistons in that short block have about a neg. 8-9 cc fo entering into the compression calc.
