I had my car on the lift the other day and noticed that the axle seal was leaking. after looking closer i discovered that the axle was going in to far into the diff. the axle dust sheild is cutting into the housing. i pulled on the wheel and noticed that i could pull the axle out about 1 inch on the left and about a half of a inch on the right. has anyone seen this problem before and if so what is the fix. i do know that the axles are only supposed to have up to .008" play. i got big problems! any info would be great!!!

I'm not sure I'm following you - is this with the half shafts in? It would be kinda strange to pull on the wheel or hub and have it come out that far - the yoke on the inside of the axle going through the bearing and knuckle would prevent that. Do you mean that you have the half shafts out and are pushing/pulling on the diff side yokes? The yokes are held in place with a snap ring, maybe your diff side bearings are shot. Do you get any vibration from the rear when driving the car at highway speeds?
sorry if i was unclear of the problem i was having... i am getting in and out play on the diff. yokes. the yokes are going in so far they are contacting the diff case and cutting it. this in turn allows you to pull the wheel down when on a lift because the driveshaft that leads to the wheel is comming out of the diff. itself. i hope that clears things up. any info would be appreciated!!!
I don't see how these could have that much play unless the clips were actually not installed, or somehow came out. If that were the case, then you should be able to pull them right out. You could have a problem with the pinion bearins, or the differential case bearings themselves. Here's a photo....
You can just make out the clip that holds the side yoke in.
