I just posted this same question a couple of days ago. I was able to fill mine up with 1.5 quarts of Gear Oil and two 4 oz tubes of limited slip. I believe the diff holds 2.2 quarts of fluid, so I would have to think that not everything drained out via the drain plug.
I used a pump to put it in there and once it started to come out of the fill hole, I just let it spill out until it stopped (about 4 - 5 minutes later).
I drilled & tapped mine for a drain directly below the ring gear. Upon refilling it took just a bit over 1.5 quarts, used Mobil-1 75-90 & a bottle of GM posi lube. The car will leave two 335 sized black marks the exact same length for as long as I prefer..... :D

What type of plug did you use? Did you get it from the dealer, or a parts house? And if you got it from the dealer do you remember the part number? I think a female type plug that would accept a hex wrench would be best to use as my exhaust is very close.
shamvette, that looks great!
I didn't even remove the exhaust. Just studied some pics of an open Dana 44 then drilled & threaded the case for a 1/4" NPT pipe plug.
The idea is that most of the chips while your drilling just fall to the floor as you are not thru the case yet. Once you break thru the draining oil carries out the balance of chips. Then I just used a long 1/4" pipe tap. Installed an allen head type (flush) pipe plug, refilled, drove about 75 miles came back pulled the plug & drained, then refilled with Mobil-1, if I had it all apart I'd do exactly what shamvette did...
My brother-in-law just removed the bottom bolt of the cover and drilled a hole thru bolt hole into the diff. We did this when he had the pumpkin out of the car. All I have to do is remove the bottom bolt. No fuss, no muss. :)
Shamvette,
I like what you did. When I was getting ready to install a drain plug in my Dana 44 I didn't like the idea of threading the thin case aluminum. I never thought of welding in a plug. I did install a drain plug, but I put it in at the webbing on the rear of the case where it's beefy. It's a little tight to remove with the LT1/4 exhaust system, but not a real big problem. Yours looks like it's clear of the exhaust, very nice.
