rear axle clusterf**k
I replaced the rear axle u-joints in my '91 as I was getting what sounded like u-joint clicking noises and I paid a local corvette place $100 for a diagnosis to confirm it. I still had the noises after replacing the u-joints though. I took it back and they said it was the drive shaft u-joints. Then they said it was maybe the trannie then they said it was the drivers side rear axle cracked internally. I replaced the axle half shaft and about 90% of the noise went away. But theres still some noises Im not comfortable with ignoring. Theres no slack at all in the u-joints for the drive shaft but there wasnt for the rear axles either. I guess I replaced them for no reason as it turns out. Has anyone had both rear half shafts go bad at the same time?
Obviously, I can't hear your noises, but if they are coming from the diff, try changing your lube. Use a good quality dino grease and be sure to add the GM posi additive. Don't laugh until it doesn't work. Good luck, and...
it can be the splines in the outer bearings mine does the same. a friend is a good vette mech and says they get rusty but its no real problem.
hope this helps.

I guess I plan on doing burnouts until something snaps, then I'll know what the culprit was.
Gee Centralcoaster, that is MY philosophy when I can't figure something out. When it breaks...then you know what it was! Of course, this approach has cost me a set of tires that wore out at less than 6000 miles... :D
