Default How do I take off the gearshift **** -88 Auto ?

Please could anyone tell me the procedure to remove the gearshift leather handle from my 88 auto ?

I located one item in a search - by Tom35thanniversary - he had the button off and was stuck - I don't even know how to remove this gearshift button !!

It's probably some simple thing - I've read my GM manual for 30 minutes - page 7A2-5 has an exploded view, the text on the previous page says to remove.....2.Shift **** and console, see section 8c.

Section 8C was not interested in telling me.

Also, if it's fairly easy and won't upset 10 other things, I'd like to adjust the travel on the button that you press down to move from Park and through the gears. I have to press mine down a long way - but I don't want to upset anything important.

TIA

Not sure if its the same as an 87, but on mine, here's what i did:
1. remove button with small screwdriver
2. remove retaining clip with ring plyers, being careful to cover opening, cause there a spring under there, and it has a habit of flying out... you definately need that spring.
3. Once clip and spring removed - you have to just wiggle and pull up on **** - can be tight, just work it up
BINGO done
4. Install in reverse order
Note: Make sure that know is completely down on shaft and set, or you can have a problem with the release button function.
Home this helps.

You will need a small flat bladed screwdriver and a pair of snap ring pliers. Put the shifter in neutral. Pry the shift button up with the screwdriver. You will see a snap ring at the base of the ****. Once you have the pliers set in the snap ring holes, cover the shift **** with your free hand because that little sucker WILL fly off and become lost! Then just pull up sharply on the **** and it should come off.

Thanks for two quick answers.

Firstly - prying the square button off - is it just a friction fit ? should I pry from the front / side / back - maybe use 2 screwdrivers - what will I break.

Secondly - thanks for the warning about the spring. I learnt a great trick with small circlips on electric motors. Put everything in a clear plastic bag and work inside - it's saved me many times - you hear the ping/splat and KNOW it's inside the bag.

I'll have to get some ring pliers - straight tips I'm guessing /

Any info on adjusting (reducing) the travel of the button - it goes way down and takes a big thumb.

Mine released on the dash side of the ****,,, dont't want to break the little lock clip (plastic) just in case you have to replace...
woops: sorry about that, make sure its in neutral.... missed that one...

On my 84 after i removed button and c-clip i still couldn't budge ****. I placed a small piece of wood below **** and tapped it a couple of times with hammer and **** popped right off. I got this from the forum, worked great.
