I just had a new vented Opti blow on me, after just 1 month and 1500 miles.
There's no coolant or oil or anything which invaded the unit.
The circuit tested fine unless the engine was warm--it went bad at 190F oil temp and not before.
?Is this a common experience here? The parts supplier says it is common. Is GM's quality on this part really this poor? Has their supplier maybe started to get sloppy?
Re: Bad Optis from the start? a Common problem? (sothpaw2)
Not sure as I have never bought a new one from GM. I have the high end miss under heavy loads now, but bidding my time until I take the engine down for cam/head swap and coversion to '95 timing system.
I bought a unit from Kragen and it had the same internals as my original unit?? Not sure since I am not original owner. Both had Mitsubishi electronics inside.
At least yours should be warranteed still....or isn't it?
Re: Bad Optis from the start? a Common problem? (Goody)
Yes--they will exchange--no questions.
Dynaspark--has the same electronics it seems to me. Not immediately available as far as I can tell. I need this now. Car has been in shop or garage (winter) more than on the road this year. All summer, it has been in the shop, except July. I actually got to drive it in July and some in March/April.
Re: Bad Optis from the start? a Common problem? (sothpaw2)
I had my last one fail wih under 1000 miles and less than 3 months. Got the new one in now so we will see how long it lasts. My prior one lasted only about 8 months but that was partially my fault. All of them have been replaced for what it costs for shipping so the only thing I am out is the time and RTV it takes to change them.
So yes, I think their quality control has gone down the toilet on these units.
Re: Bad Optis from the start? a Common problem? (sothpaw2)
Got a brand new one for my '95 about 3 years and 45,000 miles ago, not one single problem yet.
My '93 still has the original (non-vented) one it it with less than 40,000 miles, it went bad due to the lack of driving it a lot. But with teh LTCC Coil Conversion kit in there, I'll never have another opti problem ever again.
Re: Bad Optis from the start? a Common problem? (sothpaw2)
I had a vented opti go bad with about 5K miles. I didn't have it vented properly (i.e. not enough air flow). The high voltage side became very oxidized.
