I have been tinkering with the TV cable on my 85 Coupe. The tranny is new and has been shifting kind of mushy. I read several threads and by adjusting the cable I have been able to improve the shift firmness greatly. But the firmer the shift, the faster I have to go to get into overdrive. Is this normal? The manual says it should shift into OD at steady throttle after 40 mph. I have to have steady throttle at 64-65 mph to get there. Is it a trade-off or is there something unusual going on here? I also wasn't able to shift from first to second @ WOT without lifting off the pedal a little. Now it shifts great a full throttle. Any suggestions? :)
You probably don't want to hear this, but you can really shorten the life of your transmission by arbitrarily adjusting the TV cable. The TV plunger needs to be at full, or maximum TV, in order for the fluid pressure to be correct in the valve body.
I understand that. I haven't made many adjustments. Just a couple as instructed in the earlier threads by people who seem to be knowledgable about the process. Would you not agree that a firmer shifting tranny will last longer on a high performance car than a mushy shifter?
As for not wanting to here something, I do want to here it as long as it is correct information. That's why i come here, to make my car as well as possible.
So where is full or maximum TV. Am I close. My Haynes manual is a little vague. I'm looking for a shop manual, Much better than Haynes. Until I can get my hands on one I need a little help. I'm not one to arbitrarily do anything. Also I just purchased a Transgo Shift kit with video online. That should take care of the mushy shift problem. I still want to make sure the cable is doing what it was designed to do. :)

:yesnod: That's why I have a TransGo shift kit. ;)

The only way I really got "full" or "maximum" TV was by adjusting the TV/Throttle cables numerous times and physically looking at the TV valve to see how far it was seated in the bore. My procedure will be different than yours because I have an LT1 and there's a special adjusment procedure to follow.
Now I know that you don't want to drop your pan, so this isn't realistic given your circumstances. I'd definitely ditch the haynes manual and get the specific procedure from the official service manual (like you're doing).

Sorry for not being able to give you the exact procedure, I just wanted to let you know that you could damage your trans by messing around with the TV cable. :)
