Well, I found out why I had tough time getting my car through emisions even when it was bone stock. I got the exhaust off and the cat has been gutted, probably by the first owner. The car was sold in N.J. and I'm the third owner.
Getting these cats off the car to replace the manifolds with headers is a real bitch of a deal. No exhaust shop, nor my mechanic will mess with this stuff so I'm stuck to do it, at least to get the headers on and the engine bay wrapped up. But now I know it will pass emissions when I'm done with this torture. Hoo Ha!
Is it true when installing exaust headers that this might cause someone to fail the Emission test? what about ported heads? what about higher performance cam? what about bigger air intake like Super ram?
Anything you do to improve the airflow though the engine will affect your emissions potential one way or another. However a properly tuned car with mild cam, headers, intake, etc. Should still be able to easily pass emissions. You start getting into trouble when your cam is so big that you blow unburt fuel right out the exhaust at idle.
Well, just about every auto manufacturer right now has some super high horse engine out there that meets emissions. What does that tell you. If properly thought out and engineered it is possible to get more power then you can safely use on a daily driven street car. :seeya
