ok i know that i definately want some 4.10 gears for my car. or at least some close to that ratio. are all of them loud? can i get them somwhere so that they wont whine on me? where is the best place to buy them already set up and ready to install? but the main question is do they have to be loud? tia
Some aftermarket gears are louder than others, they are typically stronger as well. Much like the ZF-6. The early ones had a distinct whine to them due to straight cut gears which are very strong. The newer ones use a different cut on the gears which is quieter but it is also weaker.
I think Richmong gears are notoriously loud but they are also supposed to be pretty strong.
Rear end gears are also very picky about being setup right. If not properly setup they can whine as well.
My son is going through differential/transmisson class at York Tech in SC. The teacher is a true master at not only setting a differential up but he teaches it very well. It is a vanishing art as not many guys want to get into that speciality. Therefore, before you have someone do the ring and pinion change out, make sure he knows how and has the correct tools. It's not just a remove and replace. One word of caution, NEVER BUY A USED RING AND PINION
If your differential has never been apart, don't loose those shims and remember where they came from. This is important as they set the beginning of the pinion and carrier set up. Again, this is a detailed set up and if done wrong, a howl or whine will result. So, don't be alarmed by the cost of labor in doing this change. :chevy
My Dana OEM 4.10's are quieter than the stock 3.45's. There is no noticeable whine at any speed with these gears.
Must have been installed by a knowledgeable guy, or just lucky. My son and I are going to learn a few more things before we tackle the 411s in my Vette. He just finished his dif rebuild and upgrade to Posi. It's quiet and his teacher was impressed. I think an "A" is in order. Tool wise, I'm going to need a hydraulic press and a Kent More bearing puller. Then my son and I might start a small side business on just dif rebuilds and upgrades.
