I have a 1994 coupe, LT1/6-speed with 95,000 miles on it. I bought it about a year ago, and I am the third owner. I notice that I have a rather load whine in 5th gear, and somewhat less in 3rd gear. I don't notice any noise in the other gears, especially 6th. Just wondered if I am looking at a rebuild not too far down the line. If so, does anyone know what kind of price we are talking about? Thanks
Hi Jeff, Welcome to our forum :seeya I don't know if you are familar with the ZF tranny, but it is a noisy one. Mine gets quiet and smoother each time I change the fluid. I stay with the OEM fluid and she runs better. So, my advice, if you haven't done it yet, is to change the fluid. You're going to hear about all the different types of fluid used. Just keep an open mind.
The ZF is a very expensive tranny to have work done on. Not many guys are equipt to handle its unique construction. Try http://www.corvetteclinicinc.com Chris, the owner, did some work with the ZF, but I don't know if he is working on them yet. They have an e-mail to use for questions. :flag :flag :flag
I agree, when I was looking and driving different 'Vettes some were quite and some whinned in every gear. After checking around it all seems to depend on the setup in the tranny. As long as it shifts smooth and doesn't get louder and louder, it's probably OK. Of course, if it's suddenly doing this when it wasn't before then maybe something is out of whack. Mine whines a bit in the lower gears but not the upper.
