my 85 is my daily driver....i just had both transmission fluids changed at a well recommended vette shop. i know that the OD doesn't work until at least 140*. so any time i take the vette out i wait till about 170* or so till i try to use it. but it seems like at ALL temp ranges, it just hates to accelerate. if i shift from 3rd OD to 4th OD at 40 mph or so, it feels like i am driving with bend shafts and unbalanced tires. the car just rattles/shivers....almost like being in too low of gear. my old 91 Z28 used to THUMP then i got on the gas, and i found out that it was a bad transmission mount....is this possible? i would have thought that this shop would have caught onto something like that.
well ok...i guess then my next question is: what RPM do u usually drive at? i usually hang at about 1100....but according to what u are telling me thats no good, cuz 40 mph in 4th OD keeps me at 1100rpm. scorp....i have read many of your posts, and i value your opinion  just a lil info about my vette....1985, stock except for a hypertech stage I chip, 64K miles...i guess the only real question is at what speed/RPM's do u shift? i basically looked in the owners manual as a reference and made slight adjustments to my driving style
The 85 owners manual states to leave the overdrive button on for everyday driving - it does not give speed or rpm references as to when to use it. I leave mine on all the time, and I get much better gas mileage with it on than off, which is what is intended. And I usually hold 2nd to 3rd till 2K, and I also skip 3rd occasionally, but hold the rpms past 2K when I do. But no matter what, if you don't hold the rpms up with overdrive on, it will bog :seeya
1100 is seriously low, you might as well just let the clutch out and let the thing idle around town. :) I generally drive around town in the 2000-2400 RPM area. I don't use overdrive generally unless I'm cruising on the highway or if I'm over 3000 RPM for a while and will then engage it.
But shifting at 3500 is fun too, and harmless to the motor.
Slap that bitch around at 4400. :) When my car was stock my best ETs came shifting 1st to 2nd @ 4600 and all other shifts at 4400. Now its 6000 and sounds like music. :)
Dont mean to jump in on you guys but I have ageneral 4/3 question, when in OD do you get a smooth non grinding 1-2 shift ? I have put synchrso and hubs in this unit and if I'm not careful I can get a 1-2 grind when In OD, have any of you experinced this, I'm starting to suspect the reverse lockout rod? and shifter wear? any have this experience, thanks. I apolologize for jumping in but we may all benefit from some info sharing thanks, Frank
I try never to use my OD :D Are you sure the TV cable is adjusted correctly? :lurk: Check C beam bolts for tightness. Check motor mounts. Driveshaft balanced? Universal joints good? Drape some garlic over the firewall!
JUMPIN' JACK CRAP!!! was my vette always this fast?? :D on the drive home tonight i kept th OD off and held the RPM's at between 1700 and 2000....WOW...smooth and sweet  like a whole new car. i guess my problem was that i held the owners manual to heart, but i guess those shift points are way off....far too conservative...well i must thank everyone here for their input...your knowledge has certainly made the ownership of a vette MUCH more enjoyable :) :chevy :steering:  :yesnod: :D   :smash:
I only use mine on the freeway at cruise and that's if I'm low on gas. Otherwise, I rev that small block chevy! IF your shift points are skewed, BY ALL MEANS have a mechanic check your THROTTLE VALVE cable. Very important.
