My light comes on sometimes like when I hit the brakes hard or when I take a corner hard and sometimes for no reason at all. Anyone have any ideas? Last year it was doing it more and as the year went on it did it less . Sometimes it happens if someone is sitting on the passenger seat. This year when I took it out it didn't do it at all but now its doing it again.(I put my car away in the winter.) :banghead:
Mine does the same thing; the colder it is the less it happens. I've been troubleshooting this forever, it seems. Chevrolet said it was a bad shock motor and wanted $1200 to fix it. I passed because I wasn't convinced that was the problem. This dealer has been wrong before and I think they just out to gouge a guy. I' going to write Pat Goss and see what he has to say. What makes it tough to analize is that it's not throwing a code. :banghead: :banghead:
$1200 is **** raping.......Get the codes by jumping A to C terminals on the ALDL connector and report back. This way we can figure out what is really wrong with the system. The motor can be replaced for $100 bucks if you look around. Dealers are idiots......let us know what the codes are and we can go from there
I know how to pull the codes - that is the part that's making me crazy. There are no codes! Well, it's been a while, I'll try again tomorrow. One thing I haven't done is pull the switch and check it out; gonna do that tomorrow before it gets hot (102 degress called for). :smash:
My ride control light was on when I bought the car. I asked the dealer about it and they kindly offered to remove the bulb. Anyway upon investigation I know that I need at least 2 actuators and 1 shock. Since I'm not going to replace just one shock I'm then into 2 of each.
Add that to the fact that I haven't even looked at the back so I could need to replace them too. The shocks work, they just can't be adjusted. I'll fix it someday but not anytime soon. Also the light on my dash just went out. It's not burned out because it came back on one day when I hit a large bump. Oh well, no light, no problem.
I've thought about this with my '94 and when the problem happens I'm just going to replace the shocks with non-adustable type Bilsteins. GM has just made this car too complicated! I have a Porsche Carrera also and it doesn't need adjustable ride control, just good ol' Bilsteins.

All right I pulled the codes with Gordon Killebrew's grounding plugs and this is what I got = 12,13,14,21,22,23,31,32,33,34,41,42,43 Basically all the codes listed in his book . Now what?????? :cry :(

Clear all of the codes, then see which ones come back. Then lets seee where you stand.
Currently having the same problem on my '91; the code that remains is the "gear positioning sensor".
Is that different than the actuator? All four of my shocks are leaking, I am thinking I might as well bite the painful bullet to replace them while I am at it.
Does anyone have a good source for the shocks and actuator?
all fx3 shocks are rebuildable for half the cost of new shocks. The actuators are probably ok if no teeth are broken. If their leaking then they need rebuild.......usually $50 bucks for non rod replacement, and $100 each if the rods need to be replaced. Do a search for Bilstein and get tech support about it.
Code 31 is my problem after reset, which seems to point to the actuator gear sensor. Am I stuck with a new actuator or are there options? What's the best route for the rebuilds?

Re: Service ride control (mattw)
Out of position codes are triggered if the computer senses that the actuator has not found the end stop position on the shock. Remove actuator at the indicated shock. Turn the valve gear on the shock stops after about 3 / 4 of turn, then you have a bad actuator. If it spins around continuously then it is a bad shock
